Like a boss even though it's just a simple cert compared to many others. I take the 802 in 2 weeks, then I move on to CCNA.

I think the CCNA will be pretty easy for me because it's a topic I really enjoy.

The moment they made their certs expire is the moment they made each and every single one of their certs completely worthless in my eyes.

....but congrats man :)

I have the A+ from when it didn't expire... does that mean it's worth more???

Expiring them means you are more current if you still hold the cert.

Congrats.

I wouldn't advise you to tackle the CCNA, however, unless/until you have some hands-on with real-life Cisoco gear. I'm glad you enjoy the topic, but the line of Cicsco certifications are designed for those who actually have experience.

Realistically, you'd look over or under-qualified, and your resume would be trashed.

... It means you got it before it had the expiration clauses added - sooooo yes, it would be worth more in my eyes?

Expiring them is making a cash cow out of certifications, as if A+ Certs weren't a joke in of themselves to begin with.

Want networking/Security? Go with Cisco/M$ (Depending on the specialization).

Want "Dur hur I can use a mouse and keyboard" A+... well, I guess get the A+ and keep renewing that cash cow.

The A+ isn't a "joke" -- they're entry level exams.

Perhaps you're simply more experienced than A+ techs.

Congrats!

You'll find the CCNA much more satisfying. Though, I suspect that it will require a bit more prep...

Best of luck!

Funny thing is that even though the A+ I took way back is based mainly on Win 95 & NT its gotten me more work then all the other certs I have combined!

Makes no sense at all.

Anyone who says the A+ is a joke hasn't applied for a job in the last 5 years.

HR Departments are a joke. You could have all the experience in the world, but if that A+ cert isn't on there your resume gets thrown out.

I went through the Cisco Network Academy already. I just wanted to start off on something easy to get some attention for entry level work, and learn about how the exams are conducted. I got a 100% in all my classes for the Academy and a 99% on the final exam for the last class. I know the material, I just need to study to be fully comfortable.

You can extend them through some pretty simple free methods. I think you get credits even for doing Professor Messer study groups.

It's easy to say they are just doing it for the money but if I'm an employer, having a cert that requires renewal - and hence updated knowledge - is more worthwhile than saying I have one from 2001 so I'm certified. Hell I was never even tested on SATA, etc. How is having outdated knowledge more worthwhile?

Mouse and keyboard? You must not have ever even looked at the criteria.

b.

i know i'm not the OP, but i have an A+. (well, had, but it lapsed like 3 years ago after not getting me a job. fuck comptia.)

I doubt it's Comptia's fault you didn't land a job. I recall a thread in which you didn't even know basic math, the order of operations. This is something most of us learned at the ripe old age of 12. Some even younger. You literally learned PEMDAS on these boards. Well to be fair you were aware of PEMDAS, but you didn't know that multiplication and division along with A & S were to be calculated left to right because they have the same precedence.

That might not have come up in any job interviews, but one wonders what other misinformation you were carrying around that showed through.

Why wait two weeks? I took mine back to back, the anticipation would have drove me nuts. Congrats OP.

I pasted A+ in Job Corp, that was fourteen years ago then grabbed a welding cert. I don't even use those skills. :/

What I really want to do is learn C++ so I can make some nice data decoding shit for two way communications.

Just passed the 220-802 and am now A+ Certified. Getting the CCNA Next.

Pretty great feeling when you succeed at something you put a ton of effort into.

Congrats!

I always wanted to get some certs, but the fact that they expire has always been a turn off for me. All that work and studying and it's only good for a few years. I suck at theory stuff and memorizing lists and such so it would probably take me as long to get a cert than the time it's good for. In college the Cisco courses were based on CCNA I would bomb the tests but get near 100% on the practical parts. Want me to setup a network in a specific way and make it work? No problem. Ask me to list which of these 10 items are considered part of some list that we had to memorize? Forget it. I was the same way in programming. Stop asking me all these theory questions, just tell me what you want the program to do and I'll write it. :p
