be happy you don't have personal property tax on vehicles... that check HURT this year (but i knew it was coming and planned accordingly)

Now that my cars have depreciated a lot, I only pay $1500 a year in car registration, so I'm happy about that.

This just sounds like bad planning. I have no pity!

Yeah, I messed up. Every other bill I've paid way in advance - in some cases several years in advance. In fact, my biggest problem with them is that I have such a large positive balance that some companies keep refunding the money instead of deducting it each month like I planned.

But taxes takes me a 2-5 days to figure that stuff out, so I tend to procrastinate on it. I knew this year was going to be bad when my tax accountant kept calling me to ask if there was anything else I'd like to deduct or had forgotten.

income tax is fairly cheap in VA compared to say MD ... and the gun laws are much better in VA for gun lovers :)

Guns are driving up my tax bill!

When I was into computers/electronics, I'd buy 1-2 computers per month, but I could largely deduct them. But now that I've switched over to guns, I can't deduct any of them.

We have vehicle registration fees in CA tied to the value of the car, it's kinda the same thing.
Registration fees in Michigan are tied to the value of the car here in Michigan as well but they aren't even remotely comparable to the personal property tax assessed on vehicles in Virginia. We pay a pretty significant sales tax when we purchase the car and then a couple hundred a year to register the car. People here would start cleaning their guns if the state tried to implement a personal property tax on cars like Virginias.

well you have to remember that VA has no county income tax like MD

for example:
  • in VA
    • 5.75% income tax
    • 4.2% personal property tax on vehicles (fairfax county)
    • 4.15% sales tax on vehicles
  • in MD
    • 5.75% income tax
    • 3.2% county income tax (for montgomery county)
    • 6% sales tax on vehicles
so in the end, it really depends on how much you make, what you own, how long you own it, etc.. to determine how much you spend for a vehicle during it's lifetime
