Just paid a ticket from 25 years ago

Kind of embarassing but back when I was in college I got a ticket at the Lincoln Memorial for failure to obey a traffic sign from the Park Police. Since I may have to go through the DoD clearance process again soon it occured to me it might be time to clear this up. 10 minutes on the phone with the DC government and $30.00 later it is off my record. The funny part was after it was all paid the guy wanted to know how I learned about the outstanding ticket. I told him the last official notice I recall receiving regarding it was about 8 years ago.

I owe a ticket from November 2000...the cop copied my SSN down incorrectly so I never paid the $135 ticket...I have not heard anything about it since...perhaps it will come up if I ever get pulled over but I don't know...

It was for petty larceny...all we did was move a road sign like 6 feet because a) it was heavy b) we were ripped c) it was like 2 degrees outside...how is that petty larceny? I have no intention of ever paying that ridiculous ticket...

hahahaha. they didnt charge you any kind of fines?

Believe it or not the $30.00 included fines and penalties. IIRC the original ticket was $15.00.

You won't pass a DoD security clearance if you have a parking ticket? Do they think some foreign power is going to blackmail you by threatening to expose it? Or is this a blatant manipulation of the clearance procedure to help collect government revenue? You decide.

Was it a $30 ticket back then?

If so, that's a pretty good deal... Even at 8% interest $30 25 years ago would be $205 now.

This wasn't a parking ticket, it was a moving violation and I really don't know that DoD would care about it at all. I have had DoD Secret clearances in the past with no problems but I know they go into a lot more background type stuff for clearances above that and just figured it was time to clear it up.

You could fight that ticket anyway. Any mistakes on tickets are a great way of getting out of them. Hell my friend fought one because it didnt have his current address down correctly.

Wrong. Small mistakes are *rarely* grounds for a ticket to be thrown out.

It wasn't even a road sign really...it was more like a tripod for road construction...we didn't carry it away...we slightly moved it...it was never put back in the original spot so its use was still intact...one thing I do recall is it took two squard cars and two cops to write two tickets...while the one cop, who drove down the wrong way of a one way street to catch us, wrote the ticket the other was just flashing his light into our faces...then a gunshot was heard and he left...

Oh, that's not that bad then 🙂 I thought maybe you ripped off a stop sign - I've seen accidents where the stop sign had been removed - there is a real and physical danger to everyone when these punk teenagers do stupid crap like that b/c they want a stop sign in their room or they thought it would be funny.

No no, those signs are not heavy at all...this thing probably weighed 150-200lbs which is why we could only carry it like 6 feet...of course when you're shitfaced it feels more like 400-500lbs...

If it was compounded continuously like most banks (I believe), it would have been $221.67. Ouchiez!!

I don't think that applies here. I think the way traffic tickets work is that if you fail to pay and do not show up for court you are found guilty in abstencia.

I got a speeding ticket in NY state back in 1998, I think it was for $100. Never paid it, and moved to Ontario and got a new license 🙂

I hope in 20 years I won't be posting a "Just paid a ticket from 25 years ago" thread... unless they hunt me down
