Just ordered XP 1600+. What can I expect when oc'ing...?

As the title says, I finally ordered an XP-1600+ from NewEgg, as I simply could not ignore the price any longer.

I built my existing system last January with the plan to put in an XP 1600+, but then landed an old 700mhz Duron from a friend's computer that I built and then upgraded to an T-Bird 1.4ghz. I unlocked the Duron (both Multiplier and Voltage), and have been using it at 1.85v & 133x7.5 (997mhz) ever since. Now I plan to unlock and over clock this new XP-1600+.

1) How far can I expect to take this system by raising the Multiplier at 133mhz FSB?
2) Then, how far above 133mhz can I expect to take the FSB?
3) What should I use for voltages at different speeds?

My existing system is as follows:
Case: Enlight 7237 mid tower with Enlight 340w PS
----(Both PS pots tweaked, for just a bit more power)
----(Good Front Intake and Rear Exhaust fans, 1 each)
----(Metal fan greats cut out and wire grills installed)
Motherboard: Shuttle AK31A (Rev 3.1 / KT-266A)
CPU: Duron 700 @ 997mhz (133 x 7.5)
Ram: Crucial 256mb PC-2100 unregistered. non-ECC
HS & Fan: Dr. Thermal TI-V77 (32cfm)
HD: Maxtor Diamond Max 40gb 7200rpm
CD-Rom: 48x
CD-RW: Buslink 32x
Video Card: Visionteck GeForce2 GTS V (Pro)
Sound Card: Ensonic PCI
Modem: Creative V92
IDE Controller: Promise - ATA 100

Seems like many people are getting 1750MHz by bumping the FSB to 166MHz on KT333 motherboards, so that's a fairly good overall target. The AK31A 3.1 probably doesn't have the 166MHz option but of course you can tweak the multiplier instead. I don't feel good about getting the PCI bus too far from 33MHz due to the possibility of HDD corruption, so if it were me, I would try not to OC the FSB more than 10% (146MHz or so).

No, I do not believe that the AK31a has the 1/5th divider for the AGP and PCI busses at 166fsb. If I am wrong about this, someone please let me know.

Any guess as to how fast the XP 1600 can go with multiplier adjustments alone, i.e. keeping all else in spec?

If I leave it locked and set the FSB to 133 fsb, it would be running at 133x14 (1862mhz). Is there any chance of it going that high? I in no way expect it to go that high, I am just looking for some data here.

Thanks for any and all information on this.

Hopefully this is the AGOIA-Y stepping, if it isn't don't expect too much. I have tested 3 of these little gems and here is a summary.

1743MHz at default voltage, or just a slight increase
1800MHz at a medium boost in voltage, 1.80-1.90v
1850-1900MHz if you are willing to juice up to 2.05v with good air cooling.

I couldn't ignore the prices either, and since my xp1600 couldn't go over 1550 no matter what the voltage was I figured I would give it a try. I got an AGOIA 212. It will run 163x10.5 at stock voltage, this is with an sk-6 w/37.6cfm delta. I think it would run higher but my ram starts to crap out any higher than that (OCZ PC2400).

I hope it is an AGOIA stepping as well. Newegg does have pretty goot turnover so I suppose there is a good chanse that it will be. I will know if a few days.

Thanks for the data on your experiences guys. This gives me a good idea of where to start.

If it is not an AGOIA, what can I expect?

It no longer says they are selling AGOIA's. So I wouldn't know, but last I heard people are starting to get AROIAs from newegg.

Herkulese:
AGOIA & AROIA have similar performance from what I've heard. I'd expect 1.7GHz with a low-end cooler, 1.8GHz with a good cooler. btw the multiplier for the XP1600+ is 10.5, not 14. You will be running at 1.4GHz locked (at 133). You will have to unlock this sucker to get any decent overclocking (due to your mem & mobo). My guess is your sweet spot will be around 145x12.

Oh yea, the XP's are all 266's not 200's. Another one of those da*&^%'d senior moments.

Thanks for the update on the AGOIA & AROIA steppings and what to expect out of them. If the sweet spot is 145x12 or 1.74ghz, that is just over the 2100. If I can get to the 1900 speed, I will be happy.

Thanks again

I got my 1600 yesterday and it wasnt one of the agoia cores that it said it would be. It is a agora core i think. I was sick of being without a computer so I put the thing together. It actually seems to be overclocking fine at the 166 bus. I had to bump the voltage to 1.8 but the temps are looking decent. Idle temp is 45c. After playing a few rounds of UT2003 it was showing like 51c. This is with the epox 8k5a2+ board and samsung pc2700 ram. I am using a super orb heatsink right now, but my taisol should be comming in on monday. Anyone know if the taisol will keep it cooler?

Is your Taisol one of the copper-based ones? I think any of Taisol's mid-to-top models would be noticably better than the Super Orb, which has a poor reputation.

I got my 1600+ XP from newegg yesterday and it was also a different AGORA core but I still got 2000+ speeds using my older MSI K7T Turbo-R Raid Board running @ 12x140FSB at defualt voltage. Crucial CAS2 PC133 Ram. AX-7 Heatsink w/ Enermax adjustable fan.

Once I get my panaflow intake case fans i'll up the voltage slightly try a 13 Multiplier since the board has no divider the AGP Geforce 3 starts getting artifacts around 143FSB from the bus being overclocked.

Not Bad for a $55 CPU upgrade.

BTW, If your motherboard has the CPU core voltage selection feature, do you need to unlock the bridges that controle the CPU voltage?
I am using the Shuttle AK31A and it has the voltage selection in the bios. Can I change the voltage without unlocking the voltage bridges?

>How were you able to change the multiplier? Did you unlock it or something?

Yes, I used the unlock kit from High Speed PC. Pain in the a$$ to do the actual bridging part if you have big fingers even though the directions were simply enough. I was used to the Pencil trick on the old Athlons.

>BTW, If your motherboard has the CPU core voltage selection feature, do you need to unlock the bridges that controle the CPU voltage?

Should not be neccessary

> Can I change the voltage without unlocking the voltage bridges?

Yes you should be able to since your voltage is controlled via the Bios

I received the CPU and it is an AGOIA, so it should do quite well. I am going to put it in and make sure that it works before I unlock it. I may even play with som FSM oc'ing while it is in place.
