Just ordered the i7 920 on Newegg. Should I cancel and go with new socket?

I just ordered a Core i7 920 for my friend on Newegg. Since it's Saturday, it's not too late to cancel and change the order.

The computer is for gaming, but we will not overclock it.

Should I cancel the order and go for the new 1156 socket? If, so, which CPU? i5 for about $200 or i7 for about $300?

My friend doesn't really mind how much to spend, but to me it seems like you always want the "latest" socket.

Your advice?

The latest socket is less upgradeable than the older, higher-end socket. Stick with the 920, ESPECIALLY if money isn't an issue.

i7 860 is the clear option in this case.

The new chips are better for non overclockers because of the improved Turbo feature.

edit; i personally would go for the 1366 as being skeptical about the PCIe controller and how it requires vcore sooner to overclock than a 920. That and the X58 chip is better suited for high end gpu gaming.

Is he going to be doing anything besides gaming that will actually benefit from the faster cpu? Does he plan to upgrade the processor in a year?

He will see zero performance difference in gaming between the two processors. Spend that money on better graphics, a better monitor, a larger hard drive, etc. The HD5870 will be out in a month, fyi.

Agree with Zaitsev. I will be probably upgrading my e6600 soon to an I5 / Gigabyte GA-P55-UD5 mb. I really see no reason to spend the extra money for the i7 setup. I game (not as heavy as I use to...waiting for some new MMO's, play TF2) and use my computer daily to watch movies/surf the net, daily apps, etc. I run my games at 1680, with a single GPU. I see no reason for i7, as it seems overkill, and like Zaitsev said, use the money you save to upgrade your other components.
