Heat is probably not an issue. My case is well-known as a great case for overclocking, and it has triple layer panels with plastic in the inside and metal on the outside. HEat is not an issue, and I'm not even using all the fans. The triple layer is for noise reduction.

I have an acrylic case, my temps are fine. Infact, I have yet to see my 2900Pro overclocked to 800mhz hit 70C.

I'd be interested if the ATI linux drivers are usable yet.

My X1800XT is why I had to migrate to Windows for over a year. I'm back on Linux again thanks to a 7600GT and most recently 8800GT 512. Last I've seen the closed source fglrx driver made a HD38XX perform like an nvidia 8500GT -- not that great. Not a single ATI card/driver supported accelerated video playback, so I'm wondering if that's changed as well. And of course ati drivers on linux were riddled with bugs and crashing issues.

Definitely looking forward to your feedback -- I've stopped reading phoronix driver development forums after I gave up on ATI hardware.

Is it an IceQ model? My 3850 uses their own cooler, and I love it for the silence.

You need newer games, though :p

yeah it's an IceQ3

as far as the linux drivers go, i will most likely be stuck with the proprietary drivers for a few months while they work on the open source ones
hopefully this purchase isn't a let down like UT3 was

we'll see
regardless i'll have to be happy with my purchase :)

Even 8500GT level performance will be a huge upgrade from your 6800xt. And ATI's drivers have come a long way since I last suffered from them. I think you'll be very happy.

And if not, you can temporarily migrate to windows until your next upgrade, just like I did. OEM system builder vista home is $50 at microcenter, still. Or you could probably find someone happy to unload their win2k license on you for a song. =)

i like the card :)

running and gaming in linux
it is a big large, basically the same size as a voodoo5 only twice as thick
but it's fast and looks cool

SlowSpyder was right about acrylic cases running hot tho, i can't keep the cpu temps under 60c with an overclock and a thermalright ultra extreme

I guess that explains why everyone with an acrylic case seems to develop an interest in watercooling, huh?:p How much warmer is your CPU now, compared to before?

all these parts never seen another case, but if i take the top off the case cpu temps drop by 5c nearly instantly
3GHz is not stable in the case, but outside of it seems alright

the thing that really concerns me is the heat build up around the hard drives, i've never had hard drives run so hot, they are probably upwards of 70c .....

btw this system pulls about 30% less power than my P4e with a 6800xt

P4 @3.15GHz 184w idle 322 load
c2d @3GHz 121 idle 225 load

i cant wait for the " How clean is your house " team to go in and clean that place up.

Some people have no shame, if i was going to take pics of my rig to show you all i would make sure everything was spotless and clean.

Nice case though but give it 3 months and itll fit in with its surroundings. :(

Actually I was saying that my acrylic case doesn't seem to make my stuff run hot at all... ofcourse my case looks to be larger then yours and I have more case fans. I guess it all has to do with airflow.

Case pic.

^Cable management nitemare. :)

Wow, you two have made me PROUD of my lazy cable management. Einstein was right, everything is relative. Short of sucking a long-haired cat into the intake I can't see airflow being any worse.

Dead bugs would be a nice touch too.

BTW, hard drives are meant to run under 50C. Preferably under 40. At 70C you're going to have an ex-hard drive sooner rather than later.

Just saw the pics of the case... ack. That looks so crammed. Take a drill and go crazy on that case! It makes me cringe! I bet the components are begging for air flow. Back to the topic, nice video card! :)
