Just ordered my first wave of parts from Newegg!

Now, originally I had decided I was going to build my new computer all on my own. But my parents intervened, as one might expect them to, and said that I couldn't build it myself, and had to get it pre-built.

So, after all arguments failed, I went down to the local PC store, Computer Deli for those who want to Google it, to see what they would do. They said that if I ordered some of the parts from the internet and some from them, they would build it for only $40! Seemed like a pretty good deal to me.

So, the following parts are the ones I'm going with:

(note that the ones in bold can still be changed if necessary)

  • ATI X1900XT 512MB

    X-Fi Extreme Music

    Intel Conroe E6400

SATA 250GB 7.2K HDD Western Digital

    DVD DL Lite 160P6S BB

    Antec P180 Case

    CoolerMaster 600W PSU

    Patriot 2GB (2x1) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC25300)

    Windows XP Home

Asus P5B Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX

    Sceptre 20.1 inch Widescreen LCD

    Logitech G5

    XTRAC Hybrid Mouse Pad

    Lite-On SK1788 Wired Keyboard

    Logitech S-100 2.0 Speaker

Now, all of this including tax, shipping, and Computer Deli installation come to $1900 and change. Pretty nice huh?

Anyways, if there are any changes that you think should be made tell me now. All items in bold can still be changed. The one thing I'm doubting now is the X-Fi sound card, which I bought at Circuit City for $97. I've been hearing people say that the Auzentech Explosion is far better than it at nearly the same price, or cheaper after the rebate. What do you guys think? I can still return the X-Fi if I need to.

As some of you know, I also wanted a nice pair of gaming headphones to fit into my budget. That didn't work out, but I still want one. I've pretty much narrowed it down to two after much research, and they're both Audio Technica. The two I'm deciding between are the ATH-A500 and the ATH-A900. The A900 is about $90 more than the A500. I know both are plenty good for gaming, however I also wanted to use them for music, and people say the A900 is a fair bit better than the A500 for that. So, do you guys think it is worth the extra $90 for the A900 over the A500?

Thanks guys for your anticipated help. I should have my new PC up and running by next week and I hope I will love it!

P.S. Does the standard version of Windows XP Home come with all the basic applications that it normally would when purchased through someone like Dell, such as Word and other apps?

No, Windows does not come with Office, you have to purchase that separately. You can get OEM versions or retail versions, or if you are in school or anyone else in your house is in school, the Student and Teacher version is only 99 dollars at CompUSA right now, after 50 dollar mail in rebate. Windows does come with Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer and a few other things.

Do your parents have a rational explanation for not letting you build the computer yourself? It's your money, and they're essentially making you throw some of it away by paying the higher prices for local parts as well as the fee for building it.

Unless you do some heavy business work, just use open office. It's slower, but it's not something you notice if all you do is write reports on it.

Microsoft Windows = operating system
Microsoft Office = word, excel, powerpoint, etc.

i would change the power supply to a 500w psu made by fortron, enermax, or seasonic (in no particular order).

make sure you're getting the correct western digital drive. the WD2500YD is the fastest 250gb Western Digital drive i believe.

how much does your dvd burner cost? if it costs more than $40-45, get a cheaper one

If all you want is Word, then you can buy the Works 2006 suite for $60 + $20 rebate which inlcudes Word 2002. For a sound card I'd stick with a Creative card. The reason is that game developers make sure their games work flawlessly with Creative sound cards first.

And $40 to build a computer from parts is not bad at all.

i'd change the hard drive o a seagate perpendicular 320gb or 250gb, another good choice would be a samsung spinpoint drive. my friend's WD caviar SATA 160gb 8mb cache drive overheats like crazy in a well cooled case...

The whole Microsoft Office is available at many torrent/p2p networks. Not that I am suggesting anything.

OK, I got my monitor in the mail yesterday, and it looks very nice. Definitely not too big, might upgrade to the 24 inch eventually though. It still is a big improvement over my previous 15 inch though.

All my other parts should be arriving today. I still need suggestions on the headphones though. Please help, thanks.

Get the Sennheiser PC-150 headphones.

Good quality, good price, and a nice clear microphone.

Dont think its worth paying any more for anything else.

I was going to buy my Conroe chip from the local PC store. They will be building my PC tomorrow, and I should get it home tomorrow also. I also planned to use the headphones for music, so I think I want a better pair than the standard gaming headset.

But, after reading some reviews, I've narrowed it down to these four.

Audio Technica AD700

Audio Technica A500

Audio Technica A900

Medusa 5.1 Headset

So, final opinions? I've decided to hold off on the purchase until tomorrow. Thanks!

Oh, also, if I don't go with the headset, what good quality mic can I get for around $20?
