Just ordered DSL...never had it before...question

I'm moving on Thursday and just ordered DSL. It's 3Mbps for $40/month so that's pretty damn sweet. 🙂 That's what I ordered.

Anyway, the lady needed a user name. She claimed that I will need to use it to sign on each time I want to use it like any other internet service. I told her that's not how it is with cable and I wasn't aware that is how it is with DSL - but I wasn't going to get into an argument over it, so I just let it go and told her what username I wanted. I figured maybe she just wants it for the main email address or something.

With DSL, do you have to login each time you want to use the internet? Or is it like cable where it's always on? I mean, in the link it says always on...but does that mean it's always connected and available for use without logging in or does it mean I'll have to put in a username/password everytime I want to use the internet? It's not a big deal, just curious really.

It depends on how the network is setup.. but this is common.. Personally I don't have to login, but I know people who have DSL and they have to

You have to log in every time, I just let it save all my details and set it to connect automatically at startup though.

mines always on, but I had to have a username and password too? I plugged it into my router so maybe it drops connections and then just reconnects right away?

Some of them you have to dialup to access it. Just get a cheap 486 box with FreeSCO + PPPoE module and put that in the middle so you're always on.

My friend who has it, has to log on to turn it on for the first time. If he leaves his computer on, it will stay on from there. I have cable so I don't have to worry about this at all.

Mine's configured directly in the DSL modem (Westell, I believe) so it's always on and I never see any type of 'connecting' message.

Oh, so I might need to login, I might not. If I have it set to login everytime at startup will it boot me off after a certain amount of time? Is that where the 486 box that M4H was talking about comes in?

BTW, I will be using a router - currently an SMC Barricade 4 port, will be getting a WLAN soon - will it pick up the connection automatically if it drops?

I have to log in using a username and password for my DSL. PPPoE is not all that uncommon. There are 3 typical ways that a broadband provider will authenticate users:

1) The MAC address of the cable/DSL modem
2) The MAC address of your ethernet card
3) PPPoE

The problem with PPPoE is that in versions of Windows prior to XP you have to install extra software to log in to your provider. If you plan on using a router then I think all the current generation of routers can handle PPPoE.

So it's looking like I'll be able to just have it connect everytime at startup (I reboot once/week max so it's no big deal) or I can configure my router to connect? That's assuming I even need to login.

It's just so strange since I've had Time Warner RoadRunner for the last 3-4 years and not had to log in since I had AOL. :Q

Depends on the type of "modem" you have. If it's a standalone external device that connects via ethernet, it will probably stay connected all the time.

If it's USB, PCI, etc. then you will most likely have to connect each time. (very likely)

You connect using a dialup connectoid with a VPI and VCI instead of a phone number (1,1 ; 0,32 ; etc.).

If you have PPPoE you need to have your router or your software connect every time.

If you have standard dynamic IP DSL then you should be able to plug in your ethernet cable and surf without touching anything,

Some ISP's have a connection limit, you may get kicked off after a set period of time.

Only if the connection is completely idle right? Not if I'm downloading something for a few hours though correct? 😛

Depends on the ISP. I had a dial-up ISP that would boot you every 8 hours no matter what you were doing. It would allow you to re-connect immediately, but it would kick you.

Ah okay. Fair enough. Odds are I won't be downloading anything for more than an hour or two anyway. Especially with 3Mbps behind me. I don't download movies or anything that big...at least not in a long, long time.

Anyway, thanks guys. Good to know. I guess I'll see exactly how it's setup when I get the modems and service. I should be all hooked up by the 30th. It's going to be scary...I move in on the 26th...won't have the internet for 4 days! AHHH! 😛 I might have to read or something productive like that.

same her, but vice versa.

thats how the new one is. i have the old system which is just like cable. they tried to get me to switch over, but i told the lady what she could do with "logging in" 😉
