Just ordered Dragon Age collectors edition for the 360

So today I finally got around to reading about Dragon Age. I decided it looked good enough to buy and went to gamestop to pre-order it for the special armor.

Only gamestop said no. They told me they have stopped taking pre-orders for the collectors edition (which has extra items) months ago. He asked if I wanted to pre-order the regular game and I said no. As I walked out the guy yelled at me that I need to get in at least 6 months ahead of time if I really wanted the game.

So I got home and went to EA.com. They let me pre-order the collectors edition without problem. It's the last straw for me with gamestop. I'm sick of the games not being in the CD cases, I'm sick of being treated like a criminal in their stores, and now I can't even buy the games I want.

That sucks. I think the CS part of it varies wildly by location, as the folks as my local GS are quite helpful and know their shit. I still don't like the games out of the case thing, or the used game prices, but I've never had the CS problems a lot of folk seem to have.

Sounds more like that GS had a set allotment of Collector Editions available for that game and already sold out of them. Not saying that that makes things better for you in this case but there probably really wasn't anything that GS employee could do at that point for that particular store. <shrug>

I went into a Gamestop one day to buy some used games. They were $5 less than the new ones. I also saw a clerk up-sell a game to an idiot with nightvision goggles for close to $200. I walked right out.

Why was the guy wearing nightvision goggles in the store? ;)

It was the game, not the idiot, that came with NV goggles.

At least they were honest with you and didn't have you preorder it anyway and then you go to get it and they don't have enough.

Their used game prices are a rip off. You should see what they pay for the games before they turn around and sell them.

That would be the Modern Warfare 2 super special edition thingy.

You know, I hate a lot of things gamestop does (Like selling opened/played games as used) but really don't forget, they are there to make a profit like any business. If you are smart about it you can get decent deals on used games.

You can buy an edge card for $2. That gets you 10% extra on trades, and 10% off. Each week they do an email coupon, it can be about 20-25% off a used game. That stacks with edge card. People trade in a lot of brand new games a week or two after. Gamestop sells them for $50-55.

A game that came out a week ago, brand new at $60 can be had used at gamestop with coupon and edge for $36-40. I think that's a pretty good deal. I can't tell you how many used games I've bought by friday, that only came out on tuesday of the same week.

People still shop at GameStop? :Q

Their customer service has been horrible for years, they've been blatantly ripping off customers for years, and their "you must pre-order or you'll never get the game!" sham is ridiculous. You can walk into any brick and mortar store, or order from many random online shopping sites, and you'll be able to get the "latest, greatest" game on launch day, collector's edition or regular.

I think what got me the most was the conversation. I didn't really go into in my post but it went like this.

Me: "I'd like to pre-order Dragon Age, collectors edition"
CR: " Dude, we stopped taking pre-orders on that months ago, you are way too late. But we have the regular version still up for pre-order."
Me: "Ok, nevermind, thanks anyway."
CR: "What you don't want the game?"
Me: "I'm going to check and see if I can pre-order it elsewhere."
CR "Good luck with that"
I walk out and as I reach the door he yells "Next time you need to get in here at least 6 months in advance!"

Just too high sell for freaking video games.

Every Gamestop is different. I know all the people who work at my local store and they are all cool. When they offer somebody a pre-order and the person says no, they reply only with "Alright, that's cool man." Even the manager was dueling with a customer on the DJ Hero demo kiosk yesterday.

I think the problem with a lot of Gamestops is that they are staffed by arrogant teenagers who think they are god's gift to video games.

I may pre-order the collector's on EA as well. Sourceninja, does ea.com charge you when you pre-order, or after it ships?

It makes me wonder if this Collector's Edition is, in fact, limited (like the Mass Effect LE). All of these mass produced editions are getting out of hand.

Or, more conspiratorially, they're limiting the number of CEs that retailers receive. *shrugs*

There's no reason not to use EA's store versus Amazon at this point, as they give you free shipping, too. Plus, they give you TWO free in-game items! Score! :p

I avoid my local gamestop due to a certain know-it-all belligerent employee who always has to have the last word and be right. He seems to be there every time I go. The other employees are pretty nice, but I can't start a decent convertation with any of them without this guy butting in. Apart from the usual things like not wanting to support a store that sells extremely scratched used games and other things, that's really why I don't go. So I deprive myself of some potentially good conversation and just run through Best Buy, grab what I need and leave, never even having to talk hardly at all.

Of course I wouldn't of had a problem if he had just said that. Instead, he decided to tell me I'd never get my hands on it and I should just accept the non-collectors edition.

Yeah I'd probably never go back there either. Well, I actually told myself I'd never go to Gamestop again but then all of the Game Crazys that were near me closed. So I don't have much choice for some games.
