I've always been a desktop man, but lately I've been wanting something portable to take around with me to class and to the library. I've got pretty high standards, so not until recently have laptops really peaked my interest. After eying the 9200 for a while, I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on the 9300.

I tried to order only the bare essentials that i needed, so that I can upgrade later when needed. My configuration:

1.86 Pentium M
512MB RAM
17" UXGA TRU LIFE screen
Geforce 6800 256MB
40GB HDD
6 cell battery
24X CD BURNER/DVD drive

I figure i can always upgrade the ram and HDD later, even the battery too. This configuration cost me a grand total of $1377 before tax. I feel like this notebook was an exceptional deal considering the components I'm getting.

personally I don't think it's something you'll be carrying around to class. Unless your class has huge desks, you're gonna have a tough time putting it on a flat surface. Not sure if you've seen 17" lappies but they've got huge footprints. It's more of a portable DTR. Something you primarily keep at home but can still take on trips, excursions etc. without too much problem. Not knocking the laptop (great specs, damn light for its size, great screen) but if you want something class/library worthy I wouldn't get anything larger than 15.4". I find 15.4 is the perfect size for carrying in my backpack or in a laptop bag without having it be too cumbersome while still giving me a very nice viewable area.

Dudheer,

How did you get that price? I configured one with less equipment for $1127. I want this deal.

I just got $1427 with the plain 60GB drive upgrade. Do you know if the video is upgradabole down the line? I think ATI would work for me for now and I would rather not spend the extra $200 on it.

get the 12 cell or at least a 9 cell...the 6 cell will be eaten up in less than an hour...yes even though its a P-m...with the high specs...it won't be of much use..

get at least 9 cell or better yet 12 cell 3+hours on those

The X300 cardi s not a very good card at all(the MR9600 and MR9700 are faster for reference). The 6800go is THE reason to order this laptop. Go with the vanilla Hard drive and less ram as these are much easier (and cheaper) to upgrade later.

only offer 6 and 9 cell batteries. Everywhere i plan on taking the laptop has AC outlets, so battery life isn't a huge concern to me. Plus i can just buy a 9 cell later on if the 6 cell ain't cutting it. I spec'd mine out to give me great performance at a great price, it's also quite upgrade proof. THe major things i left our were the memory, HDD, and battery, all of which are easily upgradable.

Oh i used the $750 off coupon to get that price.

You definitely should get the 9-cell, you will probably max out at 2 hours of battery life on that hoss. And you did get an excellent notebook for the money, congrats and feel free to share benchies with us :D

Ah, I configured for 512, 60gb drive. From what you guys are suggesting, maybe it is a better idea to leave off the memory and other things and go for the good video. My brother says his XPS with I believe ATI 9100 is good for gaming though.

And does the XGA+ suck? If I were that gungo about the best out there, I would buy the XPS2 but I am not.

Have fun with it. Whip it out in class every once in a while :) See if it fits. Our desks dont even fit 12" powerbooks... though I bring my 15 all the time and manage!

It's been a long time since I was in school. Wish I could bring it to work but I work in a jail, and there are a bunch of thieves there. Some of the inmates are thieves too.
