just ordered a thermalright XP90

my cpu is idling at 57 degrees. for a northwood p4, is this temp too much?

right now/at stock, it will fluctuate around in the upper 50's, then if the cpu is being taxed, it'll jump to the 60's. if i overclock (2.9Ghz), it'll idle in the 60's and if i oc past 3Ghz it'll just go in the upper 60's and 70's.

im guessing this was a bit too much heat for the cpu, so i ordered the XP90 yesterday. i have an extra fan laying around so i will use that on top of it.

is this a good investment i made, or did i just waste 40 bucks on an XP90 and as5?

thanks for your input!

(btw i just finished the "space paranoids" world in kingdom hearts 2 and that revitalized my love for tron! in case you were wondering why i had a background of it...)

One of the best heatsinks on the market!! Good choice!

Not a waste of money, just bad timing. You could find xp90's at around $25 a few months ago.

Good cooler though, you should expect a 5-10c drop in temps from stock depending on your fan. Even more if you haven't cleaned the caked-on dust out of your stock heatsink in a while.

57C is a bit toasty for an idle temp. You may encounter CPU throttling past 70C, although I'm not quite sure when Northwood P4s start to throttle. Is that on the stock Intel HSF?

My Northwood P4-2.8 idles 35-38C and loads 55-58C depending on ambient temps. That's on a Zalman 7000AlCu with the fan spinning about 1800rpm.

An XP90 should be plenty enough to cool that as long as you don't have extremely poor airflow.

Wow if you idling at 57C stock, then you're in for a huge supprise. My P4 Northwood (2.26 GHz) when overclocked to 2.4 GHz with XP-90 and a quiet Panaflo idles at a very cool 31C.

Edit: That's with a Cooler Master temp probe too, not some software monitor (though Speed Fan is generally within 1-3C of the temp probe numbers).

996GT2's Northwood used to idle at 45C and now is idling at 31C after changing to a Freezer 4 HSF. Amazing...

I'm running an XP-90 on a P4 2.53 and at idle it runs 1-2 degrees above case temp. At load, around 9 degrees above case temp.

well i ordered from xoxide for 30 bucks, the 5 something buck shipping then a 5-6 dollar tube of AS5. the fan i will be using is the blue 80mm LED one from xoxide (bought an extra a while ago). i hope that is enough to drop my temps at least to the 40's...

and anandtechrocks, 31C??? WOW!!!

now im really looking forward to this heatsink. i hope my overclock will increase, or at the least stability...

Your CPU temperature will depend on the temperature inside your case. Just keep that in mind.

Yep, like RallyMaster said my parents' 3.0GHz Northwood idles at 31-32C now on the Freezer4 with MX1

Freezer's fan has been undervolted to spin @ 1400RPM vs stock 2200, so performance is amazing

Your XP90 should do as well or better with good fan

Yea, for the price this heatsink is amazing. I took some pictures just to validate my claims, case was open for the pics so the temps are a little below average. Room temperature is about 70F.

Did secretanchitman say what case and prior cooling solution he was using?

I started my over-clocking quest with a 2.4C Northwood and some OCZ DDR500 Gold EL's. Did not -- at that time -- push the VCORE above its default, but -- Sheesh!! -- the idle temperature was almost cooler than the motherboard temp at idle, and the load value didn't much want to go over 43C. That was pretty much the case with either the stock or OC settings. At one time, I had it pushed to 3.0 Ghz.

Some production runs of that CPU were highly sought for a while. I was lucky, and probably got one of the good ones. But I've never heard of that CPU burning so hot as secretanchitman's.

The only thing better than an XP90 is an XP90C -- all copper. That one has a thermal resistance below about 0.11 C/W.

i have a lian li PC-75 with all the available fan slots used up, and i added 2-3 more fans for airflow inside the case. im currently using the stock intel heatsink. my ram is 2x256MB of geil PC4000 dual-channel ram. now its at 58 degrees with only firefox that has AT open, and AIM is running. and i just started the computer too.

my temps should be dropped a bit i think. i will keep you all updated on how the temps go.

I can appreciate your enthusiasm for the product, but this is simply false.

I have yet to read a single review that says otherwise...
The best heatsink is the XP-90C and the second best is the XP-90?

is the 90C really that much better than the 90? i was skeptical to pay 20 bucks more (xoxide) and ive heard stories of the heatsink damaging cpus while being moved around...true?

though im sticking with the XP90 all the way. glad i made the purchase now after reading some articles that used a p4 2.4C with an XP90 on it...dropped temps by a lot even while overclocked to 3Ghz!

It would be very foolish to pay $45 for the XP-90C when the SI-120 is $35 and the Scythe Ninja Plus 6 series is $33.

Both of these heatsinks are greater products in design and longitivity than the XP-90C at their given prices.

just got the heatsink today! i kind of want to use the AS5 that i ordered along with it, but i might save it for my conroe build in the next couple of months...

will post original HSF temps and XP90 temps later on.

Thats not true at all!!

Bonzai has some very persuasive and accurate figures to back up what he is saying!!

I am sure he will enlighten you!!

wow!!!! i just finished installing it and i clocked up to 3.3Ghz and im at 31 degrees idle!!!!!!

im highly impressed.

one minus is that the heatsink was a complete pain in the royal butt to install. thats just me... i couldnt get the 4th clippy thingy to click on the mobo rentention board for like an hour. but i finally got it on and BOY was this 30 bucks worth it! and i didnt use AS5. i just used the paste from thermalright. im saving the as5 for my conroe build.

Putting it on is actually very easy compared to taking it off. The XP-90 is an excellent heatsink, but the one thing I don't like about it is that it's an absolute PITA to remove.

Glad the purchase worked out for you!

As a side note, if you did want to use the AS5, those little plunger tubes have enough for at least 6 applications. But your temps seem really good, so I wouldn't mess with it.
