Just ordered a pair of HD555... Now I need stuff :D

Plans:
* Headphone stand / desk clip
* HD595 Hack
* Headphone amp
* Sound card

For the stand I might just go with the Sennheiser HH10 for $20

MacBook Pro
P35-DS3L Hackintosh
5.5 Gen iPod

Now let's talk headphone amps and a sound card for my P35-DS3L

Currently with my Shure SCL4 the MBP and the iPod sound pretty good but the P35-DS3L has a TON of static. I'm looking for a USB sound card that is OS X compatible any recommendations?

Now headphone amps, I'm going to need two: One for my desktop / MBP and one for my iPod. For my iPod I'm thinking about making a CMOY and
Getting one of these: Link1 or Link2 If I got Link2 I would also put a usb jack on the CMOY to charge my iPod

I have no idea where to start for the desktop/laptop amp, any tips would great!

Thanks guys!

i've read great things about the ibasso d2+ and d4:

http://www.ibasso.com/en/products/show.asp?ID=43

http://www.ibasso.com/en/products/show.asp?ID=44

either of those would suit your computer use just fine, and i *think* the d2+ should work as a portable amp for your ipod...even though it's not exactly small...but the d4 definitely will. check head-fi.org for in-depth reviews on these items.

i have the ibasso t3, and it's a fantastic sounding little amp. i use it with my ipod 5g > line out and am quite pleased.

on that note, i would suggest a less ghetto line-out solution for your ipod. look into getting a line out dock cable:

http://cgi.ebay.com/FiiO-L1-LOD-Lin...er_MP3_Player_Accessories&hash=item255b941fa6

those are great, i was using one with my T3 and 4G nano, gives a very portable SQ powerhouse. however, i kept this setup in the front pocket of my jeans for 6+ hours a day, 6 days a week, at my job, which involved constant movement and often carrying large boxes, which inevitably put pressure on this little setup, and that in addition to taking it out of my pocket periodically to change songs etc lead to the cable malfunctioning.

you can find custom made line out dock (LOD) cables on ebay pretty easily, i had a guy make me a low profile one for about $40, i haven't had the same problems with it messing up as i had with the standard kind.

Yeah that's a bit too big to carry around and it's a bit pricy :\
I'v always wanted to make a CMOY so I might just take that route
I might look into powering it via USB as well so I can use it on my desktop / laptop

well the advantage is that instead of having a sound card and amp for your desktop, it's an all-in-one device.

http://www.headphone.com/headphone-amps/headroom-total-bithead.php

that's supposed to be a very good product as well, might wanna look into it.

no matter where you look, either an external EMU or a used DAC/AMP combo is going to cost you at least $100. I suggest you forget about the portable part and to get a desktop DAC/amp combo. You can use the DAC for loud speakers too if you plan to get them later.

Well I was hoping the CMOY could hold me over till January. I need to save up for another purchase between now and then. Once January arrives I'll be in the market for a DAC / AMP combo

Well you already got it, so I can't do anything about it, but $20 for that sennheiser holder is such a rip-off. I mean, it's nice, but not $20 nice. I would've taken that $20 and either spent it on a standard banana hanger stand or saved it for a Woo Audio stand (which I have, and looks absolutely awesome on my desk).

Also if you want to save money, pick up a cheap soundcard and a cmoy for your desktop - something like the Chaintech AV710 and a cmoy off ebay or Head-Fi FS forums.

I ended up paying $6 for it 😉 I had a $15 giftcard thing for receiving horrible service

Also I was looking to keep my desk clean i have WAY too much stuff on it right now 🙁

Thanks for the recommendations

i prefer the sennheiser holder to banana stands and the woo stand. $20 is too much though, i luckily got mine off head-fi for less.

Yeah I doubt I would have paid $20... btw B&H has it for $15

The problem with the Woo stand is:
One, I'm running low on desk space
Two, it would drive me nuts having one spot of the top of the headphone pushed in

Yeah I'm weird 😉

A lot of reviews are saying that they don't even need an amp... How would one know if an amp is needed?

It's been a while since I had my HD555 but I agree with the reviewers that they do not need an amp.

I've built a few cmoys before and I honestly believe they are not worth the money. Even with dual 9v batteries they were never able to drive my dt880 250 very well. Granted, it would play louder than say out of an ipod, but it lacked the resolution and bass depth that I got out of my receiver. With my more efficient iems the cheaper cmoys (components < $30) made sound quality worse. For example, with a gain of around 2 not much difference, around 5 plays louder with noticable hiss, and around 10 much to loud. If you build one of the more expensive ones they do sound better, but with a cost around $50 I would rather just buy a pair of px100s or porta pros.

My advice is to save your money for something else.
