Just ordered a M17x R4 w/ 7970M... WideFHD 1080p 60Hz vs 120Hz.

So I just placed my order for a M17x R4 with the 7970M. I opted for the WideFHD 1920x1080 @ 60Hz over the 3D Package @ 120Hz. Other than the 3D (which, honestly, I couldn't care any less about), is there really any reason I should've gotten the 120Hz?

What was the cost difference of the two?

I personally wouldnt have added that upgrade. If the time comes you can take that extra cash and buy a 24" external screen.

That was my thoughts, I guess I just wanted to know I wasn't alone. 😉

I hate being relegated to playing on a laptop, but since the baby and with my wife's family always over I never have the chance to play on my gaming rig in the living room -- so, locked in the bedroom with a laptop after everyone is asleep is my only choice, lol. 🙂

60hz is fine especially on a laptop. Laptops are sub par for gaming to begin with, and to take full advantage of 120hz, you'd need to have hardware that can achieve framerates past 60fps effortlessly.

That 7970m is faster than a 6950 so it is no slouch.

Indeed, but in many games with maxed settings it can't even get 60fps constant. Anything close to 100fps is only really achievable in older or less demanding games or at heavily compromised image quality settings.

I dont get why people always say 120hz is only good for gaming and if you have a really good card etc... I have one of those LCDs that does 75hz, and when I turn it back down to 60, the difference is just ridiculous even in windows... Makes me wonder how the hell people can stand constant 60hz, the increased eye strain is just obvious, plus the loss of smoothness etc

I think its one of those things where at first when you upgrade, youre like "thats it?", but after a couple months using it, you go back to the old one and youre like "HOLY CRAP how could I stand this?"

So yeah, I definitely wouldnt consider 60hz at this point anymore, just like I wont consider HDDs, theyre both on their way out

I've used 120hz for an extended period of time but switched back to 60hz because the difference in Windows and in SP games (with my graphics hardware) just isn't very big, and I wanted a bigger monitor for a low cost. I don't feel any more eye strain, and while 120hz does make cursor movement etc. much smoother, I don't pay attention to it at all unless, well, paying attention. I concentrate on things other than how smooth the cursor looks.

So, I'd say YMMV.

If I'm not mistaken, you have to get the Nvidia GPU to get the 120hz screen. The Nvidia GPU is much slower too.
