Just ordered a 290 Vapor-X, and...

Now I see that Newegg has the 290X Tri-X priced $20 cheaper than the price I paid for the 290 Vapor-X.

Am I an idiot if I don't return the 290 and order the 290X instead, or is there that much of a gap between Vapor-X and Tri-X technology?

My PC is used mostly for gaming. Not necessarily cutting edge type stuff (mostly MMO & Strategy, but once in a while FPS/action), but I would prefer to get the best bang for the buck.

If you can return the card with no added cost then by all means do it. Even if you have to pay a little extra it may still be a good buy to go for the 290X at that price.

Newegg might be able to offer you a discount for your VaporX so call them first. The Tri-X VRM cooling is not near as good as the VaporX so the Vapor X will probably overclock better.

That is an interesting point. But would the better overclocking be more of an impact than upgrading from a 290 to a 290X?

I did something similar . The Tri-X is a great cooler which was $50 cheaper than the Vapor-X at the time.

If I push my voltages and clockspeeds any higher, VRM temperatures will start getting pretty toasty with my quiet fan profile I have assigned.

Sure the Vapor-X could probably handle another 50-100 MHz with the same quiet fan profile, but the performance gains are pretty minimal.

With the near-silent fan profile I have assigned, VRM temperatures never exceed 85C, and core temps remain in the low 70's. If I push the card's OC higher, a louder fan profile will need to be in place as VRM temps will rise quite quickly.

I went ahead and RMA'd the 290 (Vapor-X) and ordered the 290X (Tri-X). Newegg service could not have been any better. No restock fee and no return shipping fee.

You can use the online customer service chat and request it on the spot. It has worked well for me in the past.

Unfortunately the original order of the 290 Vapor-X had shipped already, so I will need to send it back (no shipping or restock fee though). The only real impact is that I may not see my refund for a week or so, which isn't a big issue.

I processed my new order for the 290X Tri-X and it appears to be set for Friday delivery. Maybe I should just cross-fire them... :ninja:

Reading this post made me think of a review I just read @ Madshrimps. I lol'd, so I thought I would share.

The HIS Radeon R9 290 iPower IceQ X2 OC video card is available online for about 320 Euros, placing itself in the lower pricing segment compared to other manufacturers, which is great. Besides our sample, the retail cards should also receive additional adapters like a CrossFire bridge, a DVI-to-VGA adapter and more.

They got a review sample that wasn't in it's retail box. How can a writer/reviewer for a tech site be so clueless? /OT

Refuse the shipment... That is what Newegg will tell you. UPS doesn't bill until a complete shipment so it costs less money for you and Newegg to just refuse delivery.

How can you do this?? Create a UPS My Choice account and set the shipment for pick up at a UPS facility. Don't pick the shipment up and UPS sends it back to Newegg after 5 business days. Newegg will actually create the RMA for you and refund you for the whole amount.
