Hey everyone I wasn't sure where to post this. I have spent a long time trying to figure out what I truly want to do with my life, and to find out my passion. I am overly obsessed with ancient history and mythology, and I want to devote my self to the knowledge in this area of expertise. My question is, how can I ever make money in something like this? Do I really have to give up my passion and dreams in order to survive in this world.

There is no way to unless you plan some way too. Making money doing something you love is not something that there is a book for. It's all about finding a way to do it yourself.

Go dig something up? There is some company taking infrared images of Egypt, I bet they are about to make a lot of money. See if they are hiring.

You'd likely need to get a PhD and teach.

The only thing i can see you doing with that is Archeology... and you're either going to work for/in a museum, or teach.

You MIGHT write a book one day... but that would be rare.

Ask yourself how LOTR is successful and plan your own niche in it. Or you can work for the media or entertainment companies as a lore, concept, or game element person. Or be some MMO game moderator and earn a meager wage.

Those positions are fairly rare anyhow. Anyone interested enough into the subject can look into it themselves.

You could aim for Disney if you wanted to get serious.

take some writing courses or workshops (yes you do need to do this even if you have a degree) and become a novelist

It takes surprisingly little money to survive and be relatively comfortable, depending on your lifestyle expectations and plans on children. Your expected financial requirements may have an influence on your long-term plans. With that said, unless you end up as one of the lucky few, there isn't likely to be much money in the field. Assuming for the moment that you're not in that group, you are left with three (very general) options:

  1. Pursue your dream, make it all-encompassing. You likely will make just enough to get by but won't have much time for anything else. You may end up very satisfied with what you do, however.
  2. Take a job that is stable, pays enough to be comfortable, and has some free time. You pursue your love of history and mythology in your free time.
  3. Abandon the hobby, take a well paying workaholic job that nets you lots of money, but no free time. You won't get to do what you want, but you will have lots of financial security for you and your family.
In reality there's a sliding scale between these choices, but these are the kinds of choices you'll have to make. I can't tell you which approach to take. Teaching may be a good fit between categories 1 and 2. You'd need to pursue an education degree and love dealing with kids (it's also a lot harder than it looks), but you'll get to do some history and you'll have some time in the summers to pursue any direction you want as a hobby.

Only thing I could see you doing is becoming a Historian and working at a library or university.
