Just made my WRT54GS a nice paperweight

So I needed to do something that the stock firmware couldn't handle. I decided to install the newest DD-WRT firmware to help with this. I picked the newest version, selected the proper version to install and performed the install. The router said "install sucessful" and thats where things went wierd. The prompt cam up for the user/pw and I typed my pw in, then tried "root" and "amin" with no luck. I reset the router and then tried it, a blank webpage when hooking to 192.168.1.1. The same with power cycling.

I thought the router fried but still had internet connectivity so I did a security check with a few sites. No change in the security I had before. Is it safe to say I just killed any possibility of updating/upgrading/controling my router? Is this common? This isn't the first of these routers I've killed but the others were due to high bandwidth I was using at the time (they just quit working).

If the router still has internet connectivity and prompts you for a user name and password it is most certainly not dead. Are you sure you are using the correct user/pass for that dd-wrt firmware version? I remember reading once that dd-wrt had change their default user/pass during a version change. You might want to look into that. If your router is indeed "bricked" as I doubt it is, there are plenty of "unbricking" tutorials out there. I suggest dd-wrt's own site/forums or www.linksysinfo.org.

It gave me one at first I used the wrt-dd defaults with no luck. After reseting it gives me nothing and shows only a blank page.

Do a hard reset and see if it will give you a password prompt. Now I believe the credentials are root/root.

Thanks mojonba. I bricked a WRT54G a long time ago, needed to get online fast, bought a new one, and never thought about it again. But I read this thread and thought "hmmm...." and proceeded to get it operational again. And it's a v2.2 which a zillion times better than this crappy v6 I bought. So, uhm, thanks.

Hah, I killed 2 WRT54GS trying to do that this summer. One was a power failure, I pulled the plug too soon, and on the other I used the wrong firmware (I guess the micro has to be used first). I bought another WRT54GS but it was a v.5, which are much harder to mod. I have a new $39 Buffalo WHR-G54S sitting here, ready to take the plunge...I'll let you know how it goes

Does the dd-wrt firmware change the default router ip to 192.168.1.1? Because the Buffalo default is 192.168.11.1. At least on mine.

Their website said 192.168.1.1 when I checked. Plus the page doesn't time out, just shows a blank page.

It may seem a simple thing to overlook, but did you try to clear your browser's Cache/history/cookies/offline files? I've had similar symptoms as yours and after clearing the browser cache I was able to remedy the problem.

Good idea but I tried connecting to it from about 4 computers on the networkwith the same response on each one.

well, if you feel you have tried everything and nothing is working, you could try to re-flash it using one of the methods described online for "debricking" linksys routers.

Try both http://192.168.1.1 and https://192.168.1.1. Also try leaving the username blank and using 'admin' for the password.

I have checked out a few sites for doing the firmware reload. I figured this was a time to upgrade so I'll be ordering a D-Link DFL-200 and leaving the current unit alone until the D-Link gets here. I have tried Monowall on a 300mhz rig as a fill in but it doesn't like accepting any of my ethernet cards so it' been canned. Thanks for the links guys, I'll be checking them out later this week.

Reset to Factory Defaults

If you know the IP address, username, and password of your router:

1. Follow the instructions in the next section to log in to the Web GUI.
2. Click the "Administration" tab.
3. Click the "Factory Defaults" sub-tab.
4. Select "Yes".
5. Click the "Save Settings" button.
6. A new page will open, click "continue".

If you do not know the know the IP address, username, or password of your router, you will need to use the reset button. Be careful when using this method! Apparently if you have OpenWRT already on your router the reset button may not function as it is assumed here and may actually brick your router! Research the functionality of your current firmware to be safe.

1. Press and hold the reset button on the back of the router for 30 seconds.

Logging In to the Web GUI

To use the Web interface, you will need to have Javascript enabled with any security restrictions disabled. If the Linksys firmware is currently installed, do not use Firefox as certain versions of the Linksys firmware is known to have problems with Firefox.

1. Type in the IP address of the router (default 192.168.1.1) into the address bar of your browser.
2. You will be prompted for username and password.
* For DD-WRT versions starting with 2006-Feb-28, the default username is root. Prior versions have a blank username by default.
* For Linksys firmware, the username is admin.
* For DD-WRT and Linksys firmware, the default password is admin.

[Comment added 05/07/06 by Kizane] DD-WRT v23 IE7 Beta 2 Error! I noticed some weird error while managing a WRT54GSv4 with DD-WRT V23 via IE7b2. For some reason, it cuts off the top of the area where all the settings are. I opened the control panel with Firefox 1.5.0.4, and it has no errors. Upload The Firmware
It is VERY important that you not interrupt the setup while the router is being flashed and rebooted. Do not turn off the computer, close the web browser, or turn off the router during this process! I usually just take a step back, and turn my head away so I don't breathe on it for these crucial 2 minutes.

1. You should be in the Web GUI of the router. Go there now.
2. Click the "Administration" tab
3. Click the "Firmware Upgrade" sub-tab.
4. (Only applicable when DD-WRT is already installed.) Click the "No reset" radio button (works for me, but please double check if "Firmware Defaults" would be better!).
5. Click the "Browse" button and select the DD-WRT .bin file you downloaded and confirmed.
6. Click the "Upgrade" button.
7. The router will take a few minutes to upload the file and flash the firmware. During this time, the power light will flash.
8. A new page will open, wait about 5 minutes before clicking "Continue".
9. If flashed successfully you will now be at the DD-WRT web interface.

Reset to Factory Defaults AGAIN

Do this only after you have confirmed that the firmware upgrade is working. For V23 SP2: Please do a hard reset: While holding down the button, plug in the power cord. Hold the reset button for 30 seconds. Previous versions: Press and hold the reset button on the back of the router for 30 seconds.
