Damnit, I just lost a Maxtor 40gb 7200rpm. This is the Maxtor that they sent me last year to replace the hd that originally died. No warning signs, I went to burn a cd from that drive and folder said "File is corrupt and unaccessable(dont remember specifics). I tried to move the data off my computer by using an FTP program to see what was moved successfuly and what wasn't. Transferred 132 files totaling 418.54 MB in 05:01 (1,593.80 KBps) 863 Files failed to transfer<-- 418mb out of 4.5gb saved🙁

I have had 3 Maxtors die on me, 1 Western Digital. I refuse to buy maxtor anymore🙁

I just got my DVD-r to backup my harddrives, the media arrived today, but too little, too late🙁

Make sure to backup ASAP.

wow sorry to hear your loss but dont count it out yet. try that freezer trick it actually works

and that funny Maxtor drives are teh only ones that have never failed on me all other have

Wow, I seem to have the best luck with Maxtors. I use 3 Maxtors and they're like tanks. One has been running for about 8 years, another for about 5 and a third for about a year.

Maxtor sucks... they do nothing but fail on me.. I try not to buy those anymore for personal systems... only computers for work as that's much easier to deal with.

I had a Maxtor Diamond Max+60 drive die on me, it was 11 months old (in my own personal computer) and I lost alot of stuff I can't get back... pisses me RIGHT off.. Maxtor = suck.

WD 10gigs went out for me alot... maxtors so far good luck, and WD same deal...

*knocking on all the wood*

onza

I am so sorry that your General Hardware post that was so obviously erroneously placed in Off Topic won't recieve many responses. Good luck.

Way to bump it, ass.

Sorry about your loss, that always sucks when a drive dies. Good luck finding a replacement and (hopefully) getting a refund or something from Maxtor.

Why? I wasn't looking for help... I am sure the thing is just dead. I posted in the right forum.

i just lost a retail 40gb maxtor, less than 1.5 years and it died, gonna rma it this spring break

The first drive lasted a year ... the replacement made it 10 months:frown:

First HD crash I've ever had was last fall with my Maxtor 40GB 7200. Drive started clicking and wouldn't spin all the way up. I've tried it a couple times now and then hoping to get it moving quickly enough to get stuff off. Lost a bunch of pictures... the only copies. Grr.

It finally gave out mere minutes after installing my new 80GB drive.

The 40 giggers seem to have major problems. I have had two fail, one of them is being RMA'd now, having been defective as a replacement right from the opening of the anti static bag it came in. DOA, no power.

Maxtor is good about RMA's. They sent me a 60 gig t oreplace it.It is a d740, completely silent. I am very pleased with Maxtors service. If it does go bad, they get right on fixingthe problems. Sorry for your data loss. That is why a backu proutine is so important. It can happen to any drive, not just a maxtor.

I only buy IBM Desktar 120GXP drives now. Maxtor and Western Digital have been unreliable for me as well.

I would really like to try a 120GXP despite IBM's previous track record.. they are apparently very nice.

I DON'T WANT TO HEAR THIS, I just bought that unit :Q
Tell me you like overclocking and have one fan in your box and leave your computer on 24/7
Thank you very much.

This is too wierd, I had a 40 gig maxtor HD fail today too, this is the 2nd RMA on it too... The CSR guy was an ass too, I noticed on Maxtor's website they admit to replacing HD's >30 days old with a refurbished unit, & looking @ this HD, I notice they replaced the orig with a refurb🙁

Out of a dozen HD's, I've only had this Maxtor & one WD fail on me.

Just play dumb and read the number off of the disk. On my hd it says "warranty expries xx/2005" ... so I SHOULD be okay ... right?😱

1.8A Intel
6 harddrives
cdrw
dvdrom
dvd-r
AIW 8500

2 intake 80mm fans
2 out 80mm fans
Antec TruPower 480 with 2 fans.

No overclocking. 1 of the 80mm fans blows on 3 harddrives, but the one that died was not one of them.

BTW, all of this in a Chieftec Aluminum case.

IBM - High reliability 7 7 5
Quantum - Good quality and performance 6 6 7
Seagate - Reliability concerns in the past 7 5 5
Fujitsu - Popular choice for 'econo' systems 4 4 4
Maxtor - Long history of poor quality, good tech support (they need it) 5 3 3
Samsung - Popular choice for 'econo' systems 3 2 1
