Students for Trump co-founder pleads guilty to $46,000 fraud scheme

The co-founder of Students for Trump pleaded guilty Tuesday to scamming consumers and businesses out of $46,000 by posing as a lawyer online and dispensing legal advice, federal prosecutors said.

John Lambert, 23, went by "Eric Pope" and pretended to be a New York-based attorney at a law firm called "Pope and Dunn," the Justice Department said. He pleaded guilty in a New York federal court to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Authorities said he created a fake website and claimed to have 15 years' experience in corporate and patent law. They also allege Lambert pretended to be a graduate of New York University's law school.

“Are you an attorney?” Judge Valerie Caproni asked the Tennessee native in court, the New York Daily News reported.

“No, your honor,” Lambert replied.

Lambert founded Students for Trump during the 2016 presidential election.

He ran the scheme from August 2016 to April 2018 and made several appearances on news shows, prosecutors said.

"Lambert’s de facto career was one of a grifter; he had never been to law school and certainly wasn’t an attorney. Today, Lambert admitted to his crimes and faces time in prison for his misdeeds," Geoffrey S. Berman, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a statement.

Under the terms of the plea deal, Lambert will forfeit $46,654 and won't appeal any sentence of 21 months or less, according to the paper.

He faces up to 20 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 18.

So how did a 23 y/o managed fraud people out of money by claiming 15 years of "experience" in Law? He does looks like he is in early 20's. Seriously the buyers of his "legal advice" didn't take one look at him and think a for minute on how Young he is?

I doubt they ever saw his face, or at least his real, actual one. As opposed to a video call, it's likely he was either corresponding through email or though instant messaging of some type, or other online communication. Probably requested payment through Zelle or some shit so it couldn't be withdrawn back like PayPal...

My guess is he targeted Trump supporters, and let's be honest, the base is not known for critical thinking.

And yet they needed a corporate and patent law attorney.
But did they? Sounds like you're trying to imply that since they needed a corporate and patent attorney they are intelligent? And yet... They easily were defrauded by some kid with a website. Seems like a contradiction, doesn't it? (hint: intelligent business folks who need attorneys do research and don't get bamboozled by a kid who looks like a teenager)

Lets take that a step further -- Intelligent voters do research and don`t get bamboozled by a guy with orange hair......

I think the scheme being referred to was the Students for Trump, at least that was how I read it but perhaps not. Scheme isn't normally a term for a student organization unless it was directly linked to his fraudulent activity.

I read it as him using his "Eric Pope" persona to call in to these shows to promote his his fraud scheme
