Just Learned my Thinkpad is shipping with 32-bit Vista

Please bear with me because I am NOT highly technical. I don't actually know what 32-bit vs. 64-bit means, BUT:

I know Vista Ultimate comes in 2 flavors (32- and 64-bit)

I just saw on my receipt that the laptop I ordered is coming installed with "MSWIN VISTA ULTIMATE 32."

Separately, I ordered a 2GB stick of RAM from Newegg to bring the total to 3GB, but I recall reading elsewhere that 64-bit is desired if you have a lot of RAM.

Is this correct? What can I do about it (as close to plain english as possible please!)?

Follow up questions (because now you've raised my curiosity):

1) Is there any benefit to 64-bit vs. 32-bit?

2) Would going from 3GB to 4GB make a noticeable difference (not a big-time gamer)

from what ive read and gathered from the forums and elsewhere

1) not at the moment, unless you are doing heavy scientific / image / pro video editing
2) nope see number one above

Specific applications have 64-bit versions to improve performance. Far Cry has a 64-bit version, as does Half-Life 2, but I don't know the specifics. One application I'm particularly interested in (Dolphin emulator) has gone 64-bit only.
