Just joined ProteinPredictor with Boinc - question about temps

I figured you guys would be up on this.

Athlon XP 3000+

Idle it is about 40c

After running BOINC for an hour. .

Up to 62c.

My question is will this drastically shorten the life of the processor? The thermal range for this processor indicates up to 85C is healthy - but it just seems REALLY warm to me.

Thanks for comments to what is probably an old subject.

The only thing that will reduce the life of the proc is either spilling mt dew on an open case or taking the heatsink off.

Here is a bump 🙂 Until more knowledgable people post.
I don't know if that is high for that CPU, but I like to keep things as cool as possible.

If this is your first DC project:

Have you cleaned any dust from the inside of the computer? Especially the heatsink and fan.

Is the area around intake and exhaust fans clear of obstructions?

I am running two computers with Athlon XP processors; when idle the show a temp of 38 degrees C, when running BOINC with Einstein @home or seti@home they run seldom above 55 degrees C, but the coolers are Thermaltake Volcano 10+ ... I think that you are probably safe, and that other components (with moving parts, e.g. harddisk or powersupply) will give in first. However, dust is an enemy (as GLeeM writes...). Don't worry, keep the comp clean and enjoy! 😎
