Ass kissing is semi-optional. Selling yourself however is not optional. But you never know :p Good luck!

Going into an interview unprepared = fail

I tried to prep but the questions asked required me to think too far back and talk about what I did
It just didn't sound smooth and I was too abrupt with my speech :(

When I interviewed I had a list of 50 common interview questions. Write down a prepared answer for each, practice practice practice, and come into the interview and kill that shit.

But then you sound robotic and lifeless.

Consider it a prep interview for the next one. Now you've gotten the jitters out and you'll nail the next interview you walk into. :)

Did you send a thank you note to the interviewer yet? If not, do so. Use it as an opportunity to restate your qualifications for the position (just don't go off on a tangent).

Only if you suck balls at interviewing. It's not like I spew that shit out word for word; call it a mental outline.

We learn through our experiences. Just like most things, the more you engage in a particular activity, the better you become at it. Look at it as a learning experience OP. Chances are you'll have other interviews that don't go as smoothly as planned in the future, so don't get too caught up in it. Just keep plugging along.

You will be better next time.

It takes some people a few interviews to fully adjust to an interview and some interviewers really grill people or ask really stupid questions to f0ck with you to see how you react.

I got better and I'm confident of nailing a job in my field easily. It also helps with the more skills you get the confident you get when interviewing.

Better luck next time mate!

That is how you learn. You can only learn so much with a coach.... the real thing is so much more different.

Pretend that your someone else. Like an actor would be in Hollywood. It helps you in many instances when you have to talk about yourself. Like NS1 said, practice those questions, but also practice on your character.

Heh, my E5 promotion board for the Army pretty much made any future interview look like cake. One long wooden table with a Sergeant Major and four First Sergeants eyeballing you and asking all sorts of questions about yourself, the Army, and whatever else they want to ask. I got a tiny bit nervous when I brought one of my own soldiers to the board.
