Just installed Zonealarm

I installed Zonealarm on my network and it is blocking each computer from seeing the network and other machines. I can access the internet fine, just not the other machines on my network.

Is there away around this? What setting do I need to change?

Zonealarm is installed on all networked machines.
 
yeah, add the ips of your other computers under firewall --> zones tab (make sure you set the zone to Trusted)

then on the firewall tab, set trusted zone security to medium

and im referring to the free zonealarm 3.1.291 🙂

not sure about that, but 3.1.291 does take some getting used to with the new layout of everything.. but i like so far. 🙂

ZoneAlarm has been gimpy for me in the past. I was never absolutely sure what it was doing, and the free version didn't allow me to define specific rules, like certain apps get to use certain protocols, certain ports, inbound/outbound, etc.

Tiny is straightforward, uses clearly defined rules, and does the whole per-application MD5-checked rules thing as well.
Let's you set allow or deny protocol, application, source port, source IP, destination port, destination IP.
And has an easy section devoted to allowing Microsoft Networking, with a configurable range of trusted IPs.

some do, but ZA and other software firewalls also allow you to restrict programs from accessing internet, etc. it's best to have both, imo.
 
consumer level firewalls only protect against inbound traffic. i use zonealarm with my linksys router to protect both inbound/outbound traffic.

i have to say that tiny firewall is definately a more robust/configurable firewall, but i like the ease of use with zonealarm. that and a up to date anti-virus & anti-trojan software give me good overall security. 🙂
 
My ZA blocks a request for a ping or something, I think from attbi, I assume to see if I'm still using my assigned IP. It comes up right in the middle of stuff. Do you add the ping source to trusted in local, or what to handle this. Hope that makes sense, I don't really understand what goes on with this stuff.

hmm. i think i used to get those.. from the dns server ips that i entered in my linksys. since my internet access always worked, i just left it as is. unless you're having connectivity problems, i wouldnt worry about putting it in your trusted zones. 🙂
 
You don't need to add the other machines' IP addresses. You can just define a local network as implicitly trusted. I don't actually use ZA so I don't recall the exact procedure.

The main benefit of ZA (vs other firewalls) is application-level filtering, which is easy enough for most users to understand. Dealing with IPs and ports is just too complicated for a large segment of users.

If you don't want a program accessing the internet why did you install it then?
 
My new ZA has a big yellow rectangle on the start bar with a stop sign you can click to instantly stop whatever is talking on the net.

Thanks Dakata, I do have a new and unknown problem, my cable modem is either turning off or freezing on. I don't know why but I think it might be dying.
