How does this heatsink compare to the xp90 with say a medium output fan?

Was discussed to death here.

The XP90 plus noisy fan (or XP 120 plus noisy fan) is going to be the best for OCing and cooling your processor.

The Zalman is going to be better for quiet operation with a mildly warm CPU. That's what it's designed for.

idle 42, load around 55~58, ambient around 39(rare)

MSI Nforce 3 motherboards have a tendancy to indicate temp values higher than some others. Who is correct is unclear? The key thing to look for is how much temp increase you get between idle and full load. Based on your values, you are fine. I have a similar board running a XP-120 with a 1350rpm fan and my full load temp is approx. 53-54.

Good luck.

i reapplied the artic silver and spread it out better this time and reinstalled the zalman, and now i am getting idle temps of 29C, ambient 29~31C and load around 52C. Is that strange?

Your temp readings are perfectly normal for that motherboard. 🙂
