Just installed Vista Home Premium on my HTPC rig

Lifer
got home premium upgrade for $65 at academicsuperstore.com as i am a student

did the upgrade trick and installed it twice ( did not want to invalidate my MCE2005 key)

man, i have to say that the installation was the easiest OS install i've ever done. Everything works, and ALL the prompts are at the beginning! wow, how long did it take for MS to figure that out? =) I clicked a few buttons, took a shower, and woot, it's done 🙂

Installed nf4 drivers ( i got dfi lp ultra-d w/ amd x2 4200) and they seemed to all work fine.

few problems though, but not MS's

Nvidia's gfx drivers are ass. I have a 7900GS connected to a 26" CRT HDTV, and it has overscan problems. wtf? how hard of a feature is this to add back in? also, my gpu fan is always blowing at full speed while at the desktop, come on, this isn't too hard to fix either!

The old nv drivers handled this fine, by adjusting to a custom resolution for my screen. The vista drivers however, don't have this ability so part of my screen is cut off to the left.

My chaintech av-710's beta drivers work pretty well under vista for just viewing dvds avi's and music. and the media center interface is def worth checking out.

conclusion: the interface is kickass, as a HTPC, getting text to show up in a readable manner on your HDTV is MUCH MUCH MUCH easier than it was in mce 2005!

but, nvidia drivers suck. hopefully you ATI users will have a better experience

Yeah, unfortunately (hoping not to get flamed by video zealots) in my experience, nVidia cards kinda suck for MCE HTPC boxes. Nothing but bad experiences for me, even with MCE 2005. Their DVD decoder is top-notch though, it's all I use.

really? I had a great experience w/ nv cards and mce 2005. what was causing you issues?
Poor component output quality, weird geometry problems with my CRT HDTV, if I restarted computer with TV off, wouldn't output to TV until computer was restarted again, probably some other stuff I can't remember. All I really remember was being amazed at how bad it was...I had had the card in another desktop for a while with no problems and replaced a dead ATI card in my HTPC with it, only to go out and buy another ATI card.
