Like the title says, I've just finished installing my CUSL2 with winME. Everything worked fine, untill I installed netscape 4.72. Everytime I start this program up, the picture on my screen turn into cr*p and the machine locks up.
I've never had this problem with my BX and win98.

Now, please don't tell me to kick netscape out and use MSIE instead. I use both, for different purposes.
I would very much like to continue to use them both.

Anybody has had similar experiences?

Thx!

Why blame it on the motherboard? Hehehehe.....

Have you tried the latest Netscape 4.76?

Like I said, I'm using the exact same setup as before, and the same programs. Only thing that has changed is the motherboard.

I've already experienced these lockups now in IE and ACDSee 3.1 also!

What could be causing this?

System

IPIII733 in CUSL2 (not overclocked)(bios 1.003 final)
with 256mb infineon mem 3/2/2 (5,7)
no UDMA drivers installed as this is a full scsi system :
adaptec 29160 (flashed to latest firmware and running with latest driver)
quantum 10k 9 gig U160SCSI
seagate cheetah 4.5gig UW
Matrox G400Max (with latest ME drivers)
Plex 40x, plexwriter 12/4/32
3com 3C905B-TX network card (with latest drivers)
SB live platinum (with new liveware drivers for ME)
USR courier-I modem

The PCI card are installed like this :
slot 1 : empty
slot 2 : SCSI card
slot 3 : SBlive
slot 4 : network card

I also wanted to install the latest i815patch, available from CUSL2.com, but ME refused to install it, saying it was already running from the latest driver.

I've had this problem before. I had one of the first CUSL2 motherboards that came out. Back then I installed win'98 on it. I figured then that this was a minor bug, and that would be taken care of it in the upcoming months (via bios and driver revisions etc...). So I continued to work with my BX and waited up to now to try it again, with a new OS. Win 2000 gave me trouble with my modem (it wouldn't work as an ISDN modem, only analogue), so I installed win ME. Granted, the problem is not as frequent as with win'98 three months ago, but it still occurs.
Now and then, the screen gets all garbled up and the system freezes. A cold boot is
necessary to continue.

I'm all out of ideas here, since I'm using all the latest drivers ans bios'es, and the OS is also not eh.. ancient.

Anybody else has some input on this?

Thx!

Did format and start with a fresh install of Me or did you just upgrade over 98? If you switched motherboards without reformatting this can lead to problems, especially if upgrading the OS too.

Did you try the usual CUSL2 tricks to end conflicts such as disabling legacy USB support in the BIOS, and disabling the SB 16 emulation? Have you checked system properties / device manager for conflicts? Make sure the video card is not conflicting or sharing the IRQ with another card.

I read on Microsofts homepage that people are ecperience problems with ME and AOL, Compuserve and Netscape. It requires you to try there fix and if that doesn't work you can call them. Be Careful though you only get 2 services call per license for ME after that they charge $40 per session. Like ther will not be more then 2 problems with ME, junk it and go with WIN2k.

I would if I could, but win2k does not work correctly with my modem. (it does not allow to connect via ISDN - kinda sad when you consider it's an ISDN modem)

I will give win2k another shot when I get cable access (in six months or so) and have no further use for the IDSN modem.

For now, win ME will have to do...

Thx!

Problem solved!

When I switched the G400 with my old G200, everything works at last as it should. Guess my suspicions were correct.

The G400 does work correct in a BX board though. Strange.

Bye!
