Just installed my Alpha 6035 and my temp raised big time!?

Hi, I just installed my Alpha cooler today. But then when I load up Windows and check SiSoft Sandra for my CPU temp, it was (and is now) 42c! This is terribly high considering the Alpha....!! I have a KT7-Raid and a Thunderbird 750 system. Can someone please let me know what I might've done wrong? Thanks, any help is really appreciated.

Try and make sure that the heatsink is mounted flush w/ the cpu core... i have a p3 933 and when the heatsink wasn't on properly, the cpu temp was up 72 C, but when i got it on straight, it dropped to 42 C.

What do you mean "flush w/the cpu core"? Yes when I installed I made sure the heatsink was perfectly on top of the little square CPU core. Would this type of thing happened if the thermal smeared a little around the bottom of the core? Cause when I mounted the heatsink on top while trying to clip it down (that was a total pain), it might've smeared the thermal.

Also, is the fan supposed the blow "down" on the CPU or is it suppose to "suck" the air and blow out top?

I'm with PotatoBBQ,

make sure the CPU has excellent contact with the heatsink, and that you have used enough, but not too much thermal compound

Two questions, both related to the 6035 clip.

1. Do you have the revised clip for Socket A, it has higher pressure than the FC-PGA clip??

2. Do have the clip 'flipped' 180 ??. This is easy to do since the clip just slides in between the fins. If you look carefully at the clip, it will NOT be centered correctly over the chip when installed backwards.

Lastly, what thermal grease are you using, Arctic Silver is recommended.

I too have been fighting with one of these for a week now.
I've resorted to using my GORB just so I could use my new CPU.
I believe what DaddyG said is likely my trouble. I just haven't yet had time to try it out.
Of all the things anyone has pointed out or suggested this one makes the most sense to me, I will be testing the theory of the 180 degree flip on the clip asap.

42c is not too high. What type of case cooling do you have. As a general rule your CPU temp will be 13c higher than your motherboard temp in Sandra.

can you really trust Sandra's temperature readings? I don't!
Also, what sort of case ventilation/cooling do you have, as poor case ventilation will lead to elevated temperature of all your components.

What I did was flip the fan the other way around and it's now sucking instead of blowing onto the fan. My regular temps are around 29-32c now. I'm using MBM to monitor the temps. Seems most said Sandra and the BIOS weren't so accurate so I didn't bother with those anymore. But the strange thing is that whenever I would first load Windows, MBM would show the temp 52-55c and then slowly it drops by 1c until it reaches 29-32c again. Is this what the prog is supposed to do?

You need to checkout posts by MIKEWARRIOR2. Socket A mobo temps no matter how they are measured are notoriously inaccurate because the thermistor is mounted in the chip socket, reading the temps on the back of the chip. The heat has to transfer from the core through the ceramic substrate. The hottest part of the chip is the top surface as TBIRDS/DURONS are flip-chips.

what is your room temp and the type of case you have? and 42C is not too hi especially if the computer is not idle
