I just installed the leaked Froyo on my HTC Incredible and was thinking of using the WiFi hotspot feature. However, I was wondering if anyone knows if Verizon will whack me with additional costs? I know if I get carried away surfing I may attract attention, but just light surfing what is the risk?

Can they, yep. Will they, don't know. Sprint doesn't care as long as you don't go crazy. It's one reason why I stay with them. I am not sure how tight VZW is with it.

You are talking about WiFi tether for root users?

I appears that it is going to be a feature you pay for, unless you root the phone.

I do it on my rooted Droid running 2.2 (also did it with 2.1) and havent had an issue. I've hit 5GB used in a month (my net wasnt hooked up when we moved in here, and they told us theyd have another 2 week delay) and still nothing. So long as you dont go beating the heck out of it, they wont mind or notice it. Doing it every once in a while at work with the laptop, I can do 1.9GB/mth or so average without any issue. Just dont go torrenting and you'll be fine

YES, it does. If you use the Verizon Wifi Hotspot software, you will have to pay. If you have a rooted device though there is no reason not to use either WiredTether or WiFi tethering. There is a difference, though.

Official Verizon wifi tethering= $$
rooted phone with non-Verizon tethering app=no $$, just don't go downloading torrents over it, or they will catch on and throttle you

What about non-rooted with PDANet? I use this on my DX, works great, don't pay for tethering.

No wifi, but frankly I dont really care.

EDIT: Ah, realized the OP was talking about strictly wifi tethering.

Still though, whats with the buzz around wifi tethering? I mean sure its easier, but if the difference between root, non root, and paying 15 bucks or whatever a month all comes down to a cable...?

Sure, i suppose connecting multiple computers to it, but still.

Hell, couldn't you set up an adhoc network and share the internet through your computers wifi?
