Just installed Fedora 9

Nothing has changed BUT it works out of the box. My wifi, audio and video works w/o any manual tweaking. However, updating/installing applications take forever! I'm going to download ubuntu and see if that fits me better. I love Debian but for some reason I'm turned off by Ubuntu. we shall see.

I have played with Ubuntu a couple of times. I just now installed Fedora 9 and it did a better job of setting up the nVidia video card than Ubuntu. But it didn't have the codecs to play video files.

Guess there are tradeoffs with any of the different distros.

To play video files, I stick with VLC. It has the codecs to play basically anything, out of the box. even up to 720p mkv files, my laptop with Fedora 8 and VLC just plays it all.

VLC playes 1080p files too.... in fact it doesn't matter what the resolution is 🙂

after almost 2 years of using ubuntu, I just installed Fedora 9 this morning. Left it to update when I got called to work.

Gonna play with it more when I go home tonight.

Yeah, I was more pointing out that even a lappy can play 720p with VLC. its great, the only media player I use on all computers.

I'm still between Ubuntu Ultimate and Fedora9 with all the works. When i get my lappy back I'll fire up VMware again and play more.

I went back to windows. why?

1 - getting dual monitors to work is a task in itself. I have a docking station for my laptop and a 19" widescreen monitor that's hooked up to it. I wanted to extend my desktop to the widescreen monitor but wasn't able to.
I failed at hacking the x11 conf file but I shouldnt have to do that! There's a gui tool that seems to be the answer but it didnt work too well.

2 - when left on idle and running for more than 20 minutes (I walked away from my laptop and came back), the OS froze. I see the hard drive LED lights flashing like crazy but I couldnt move my mouse or soft boot it.
I ended up holding down the power button to have the laptop shutdown all the way.

I think I'll just give up and run winxp on all my workstations. For servers, I still prefer *nix but anything graphics related, I'm not going to bother. How is it that apple managed to get darwin to a point where it works out of the box,
BUT thousands if not millions of uber hackers who swear by linux can't get it to work just like apple, if not better?

I am posting from the Fed 9 Live CD. I must say that I find it the most impressive distro so far in terms of ease of use (I just started looking at Linux stuff a couple of days ago). Took me just minutes to figure out how to get connected and I'm dense. Gonna check now how this plays music and movies but colour me impressed.

Since, they control the hardware, Apple doesn't need to support every piece of hardware ever made, makes things easier for them doesn't it.

I'm not going to claim Linux is perfect, but, I think Linux is at a point now that, on a well supported machine, it can used by the "novice" computer user. If you can't get it to work, blame the hardware companies that refuse to make drivers for Linux, or buy hardware that is supported under Linux.

Last year I converted my Dad's entire business to Linux. CentOS on the servers and Ubuntu on the workstations. So far so good....

As a die hard Fedora user (since FC4), in all honesty, for the novice Linux user I would go with Ubuntu. Fedora, can be bitch at time to configure properly, heck I still have issues and I've been using Linux exclusively since 1997.

I agree with you to a certain extent. Linux has come a long way since the last time I've tried to use it on my desktop/laptop. I recall when setting up sound was difficult, but now mostly everything works out of the box. The "novice" computer user doesnt want to hack their x11 config files to get their display to work correctly. My intel video card works w/ the right resolution but dual monitor with a generic 19" WS monitor doesnt work?

I have centos/freebsd on my servers and i love it.
