GODDAMN THIS GAME IS FUN.

Turion - Undead Slayer Paladin specializing in Halberds (going for dragon's breath / wave+4)

my other choices were Cavalier Paladin (lots of great bonuses), Assassin Thief, and of course the Monk (best class ever, but i've already beaten with monk 5+ times easily)

then i'll have my usual cast of characters - Keldorn, Minsc, Anomen, Jaheira (Viconia) and one TBD mage..i like Edwin, but sometimes he's too evil for Keldorn and gets himself killed by the Carsomyr. Jan has too few spells, and the other chick is just too whiny (not Imoen, the other one).

I have just finished BG:EE and BG2 with all mods and widescreen mod, currently playing Icewind Dale with all mods etc......I made a fighter/cleric,ranger,fighter/druid,cleric,mage/thief,fighter/mage, and they are a powerhouse lol ....once I finished that will be onto Icewind Dale 2 again.

Yep they are sure fun and I just wished they would bring out some new versions of these classic games.

I just saw Baldaur's Gate enhanced edition is on Steam. Is this the the first game or the second one? The price is 19.99, which seems kind of steep, but I dont want to mess around with a bunch of patches, widescreen hi res mods, etc.

I would really like to have the game on Steam, but for 20 bucks I could get both games and the expansions on GOG I believe. Which way should I go?

BG:EE is the first game including the official expansion, and some extra unofficial content that they developed.

First one,I got BG:EE from here http://www.baldursgate.com/windows.en.html however thought it was overpriced since you can mod the standard BG yourself and add widescreen etc...

I did not think much of the extra content on BG:EE.

Here: http://www.gog.com/forum/baldurs_gate_series/baldurs_gate_2_essential_mods/page1

I haven't had any problems with the mods so far but I did have to fool around a little with the widescreen mod. Everything was way too small at my native resolution (1680x1050) so I ended up setting the resolution to 1280×800 and everything looks fine. The only problem is that the widescreen mod doesn't work on the non ingame engine parts (such as the inventory, movies, etc.) so for those you get a boxed look.

The party I started playing as was a fighter/cleric protagonist (dualed at lvl 9), Keldorn, Minsc, Imoen, Mazzy and Aerie. I wanted to keep Imoen around for storyline purposes. I think the game also wants you to keep Jaheira around for storyline purposes but I didn't like her and I rather use a strong protaganist as the cleric. Aerie's of course worse than Jaheira but I found her usefull as a cleric/mage and I rather her than Nadia for a good aligned party.

I quit playing a while back since I had other games I wanted to play (Dead Space 1+2 before 3, Skyrim Dragonborn) and didn't have enough time but I'll probably pick it up again later in the year. I think I'll stick with the party I have now but am also thinking about running a party with Korgan, Valygar, Viconia, Swashbuckler/Mage, Edwin and Mazzy.

if you want BG:EE get it from beamdog. the steam version is not officially supported and is not as up-to-date as the official version.

Lot of unhappy posts on that website. Many asking for a Steam activation key.

Thanks for the advice, but since most of my games are on Steam, I would prefer to have any games I download to be on Steam.

Got mine direct from Beamdog the day it was released, and am happy I did as it was smooth with no issues. I cannot say the same for Steam when I first encountered it. And while I've have a decent time with Steam lately, my wife is livid as we just discovered she's missing all her Skyrim and Borderlands2 saves.

Not amused.

So far I dig BG:EE. Love the high res support and all the little tweaks and additions, but yeah extra content so far is meh. Doing the same thing OP, except my paly is a Cavalier this time (used Hunters before).

Next classic franchise for me: XCOM.

Undead slayers are only good for fighting undeads right?

undead slayer is a paladin kit that gives you bonuses towards undead. one of the biggest aids is immunity to level drain. i could have gone cavalier for bonus resists and attack vs. demons and dragons, but level drain is such a PITA that i thought undead slayer was worth it. i've already tanked several vampires for my party, so i think it's worth it.

level drain literally drains your levels - you lose all skills, spells, and HP associated with the decrease in level. if you hit level 0, you die (same with hitting 0 INT from mind flayers). the only way to undo level drain is the Restoration spell, which at minimum is a level 4 priest spell, so it's not always convenient to remove (and if you do, it fatigues your cleric).

paladins don't specialize in weaponry as much as a fighter does, so they'll have higher THACO, but they're still a good melee class. same with rangers. i give both minsc and keldorn two handed swords, and i'll end up with the wave+4 halberd (unless viconia leaves my party, in which case i'll shadowkeeper my skills to be in sword/shield and hammer for the crom faeyr)

i also play on insane - monsters do double damage and party AOE spells do full friendly damage.

really if you want a badass, just be a monk. you're weak in the beginning...but you scale with level so much harder than any other class IMO :)

yes, i've played this game too many times, haha.

Do monks use weapon or should I just stick to fists?

I was going to make an undead slayer but you barely fight through level drain enemies until a certain part of the game.

last play-through, a few years ago, i tried something different. an all EVIL party!
i was a thief and used: Edwin, Viconia, the dwarf guy, Nalia and one more which i forgot (maybe Imoen).
anyways, that was fun choosing all the evil options. turn in a quest? kill the quest giver!
pickpocket EVERYTHING and clean out all the stores, kill every dragon, summon demons and monsters. good times...

BG 2 is my most favourite game of all time. Every time I step in the light of Waukeen's promenade and the theme song starts to play, or piano melody for the Bridge district, a night in the Slums... I love Athkatla, the most lively city that I've encountered in a video game. Every drunken shout, howling in the night, chatty merchants, priests singing in a half-voice...the ambience is marvelous. All games BioWare or other companies made later feel sterile or empty when compared to this game, not only because of the infinite engine and many NPCs, but also because the ambience, which did a lot for the game and the atmosphere.

Nonoooooo not again. Don't do this to me Noooooo!

Tempted to start another playthrough now. Which starts with me obsessing over what to play as. Do I customize my whole party, or maybe use level 1 pc mod? Good or evil? Hardcore mode? Then it gets much much worse. I start cropping images for custom flare...even creating my own sound set.

My last protagonist was Glenn danzig. And sidekick shakira. I used sounds from the danzig shakira you tube video.

Yeah....its a sickness .

Kill me.
