Just installed (a working) Gentoo...anybody else? Experiences?

Boy what a PITA it was to get the Kernel (2.4.19-rc7) working right for me. (I think it was APCI...ACPI?...you know the power saving stuff.....so I used APM)

Anyway, yeah it working now....used Lilo instead of Grub, and am installing (emerging) vim right now.

Anybody else running this distro? Love it? Hate it?

One question: How do I uninstall something after I've emerged it?

I've really enjoyed my experience with Gentoo. It fits the bill perfectly. It is a pain to install the first time, but after you figure it out, it is a piece of cake to install again. They have a really good community too. To uninstall an application you do "emerge unmerge". Maybe you should read the portage user guide. If you haven't got X and your sound working, then you're probably gonna have plenty of problems their too.

thx...yeah I though about checking their forums right after I posted here and found out about emerge -C (same thing as unmerge). Haven't fooled with sound yet but I just got X and USB mouse working. 😀

The gentoo-sources kernel is a bit unstable, since its not as well tested as the xfs-sources or the vanilla-sources. However, you do get some extra speed with the gentoo sources kernel. However, for me, its not worth the lost stability. Good luck!

I was looking for something more than Debian and installed Gentoo last week. Fast. And that was with the default CFLAGS. I added -fomit-frame-pointer and emerge -e -u world. Faster.

The gentoo sources kernel is using the ACPI patch, which aren't complete yet. When I used ACPI (AMD Irongate/Viper), the kernel quickly crashed with an attempt to kill init. Removed ACPI and booted fine. I have preemption enabled and my system doesn't get dog slow. I'm experiencing massive clock drift though...............
