So I just got a GeForce 6200 OC, upgrading from a GeForce FX 5700 LE.

Games looks great. However, when trying to run ANY video file in ANY program in Windows, it causes it to bog my system down to a halt without showing any video. I talked to tech support for about an hour and reinstalled everything possible, and the tech guy and his buddies believe it to be due to an IRQ conflict. I don't know much about IRQs, unfortunately, and the guy said he'd e-mail me the instructions to change IRQ settings since it's a lengthy process.

The e-mail I got only basically explained what had to be done ("you can try changing your IRQ settings") with no specific instructions. The links at the bottom of the e-mail which were supposed to help me change my IRQ settings led to Microsoft pages that were not found. Awesome.

Here's a screen of my device manager with IRQs: http://1337.onestop.net/IRQ.jpg

I put in my old card and checked this same thing, and it's on the same IRQ and runs videos fine.

I have the latest drivers for everything, I made sure to uninstall all drivers before installing the new ones.....

I checked my BIOS and my motherboard manual, and I didn't find anything about changing IRQ settings. I'm a BIOS noob though, so....

So, does this even sound like an IRQ problem? If not, I may just have to return the card, or call back tech support and ask to talk to a higher-up technician (though not sure how much anyone there could help me).

What operating system are you using. If it's windows XP then it's extremely unlikely to be an IRQ conflict. Was you old card PCI or AGP? Is everything installed correctly in device manager(nothing with a question mark or exclamation point beside it)?

I'm running Windows XP, and my old card (GeForce FX 5700 LE) was also an AGP card.

In my device manager, I have two things with a question mark and yellow exclamation point next to them, SM Bus controller and USB controller. I'm not too knowledgable on this stuff, so I'm not entirely sure what these things do or mean.

And on the same IRQ as my video card is my standard universal PCI to USB host controller (as shown in the picture in the first post). Could this have something to do with those exclamation points?

Since when I put in my old card, I have no problems with playing video, do you think it may be a defective card?

Your SM bus controler is your System Managment Bus, and that is what is most likely causing your problem. You need to install the drivers. What motherboard do you have? More than likley the USB controler is your USB 2.0 controller, and you don't have service pack 1 or 2 installed. Do you have the driver CD that came with your motherboard? You need to install all the proper chipset drivers, the SMbus driver is usualy part of the motherboard chipset drivers.

Huzzah! stevty, you are my savior. I did what you said and everything works now. In my device manager, it still says I have a problem with my USB controller, but that hasn't presented any problems. If you think this should be fixed, I'm not sure what else to do.

Thanks so much for the help.

Do you have service pack 1 or 2 installed? The USB 2.0 conroller requires service pack 1 or 2 to be installed to work. Glad I could help with the video problem.
