Just installed 2nd HD-How do I tell my PC to boot from the New One

Hi. My hard drive is wigging out. Gateway sent me a new one. I have it installed and my computer recognizes my bad one thats not quite dead yet and the new one. What I would like to do is tell my PC to boot from the new one (call it the C drive) and keep my old so I can get data off (Call it D).

When I first installed the new one, I just put it on the cable that the first one went to in the next slot. When I tried to switch, put the new one on the cable where the old one was, and the old one "downstream" it tells me I need a boot disk. If I only put the new one on, it works fine and boots from the new one, but then I cant get any data off.

I only semi-computer literate, so any step-by-step instructions would be great!

Look on the drives. On the label it should have something about "master" and "slave" settings. There is a jumper near where the cable connects that controls this. Do you know what a "jumper" is? The drive you are booting from needs to be set as the "master" and the other as the "slave".
