Just how smokey does it get cooking with cast iron?

I have to temporarily seal up my smoke detector in the kitchen when I cook mine 😱

All 4 smoke detectors go off in my house. But it's not too bad, if I'm just cooking 1 steak they only briefly go off. It only gets bad when I'm doing 4 or so steaks.

Dammit. Is there a way to cook with cast iron... outside? Like with a portable stove? I know you're supposed to use ovens, but I don't think frontiersmen lugged ovens with them on their journeys.

They're great for cooking on the grill. If you wanna use it outside you could always heat it up on the oven while you get your coals real hot, and then move it to your grill.

REALLY REALLY smoky, but very good in the end
