im looking at changing positions within the company i work for... right now I'm in kind of a screwed up situation where I was hired at an absolutely ridiculously low rate only because of not having a college degree (hired in as an 'intern' then when i took a full position I wasn't offered a huge raise because of a lack of a degree...) I make about half of what someone would who had graduated college.

Now that I've applied and been interviewed for this other position, I am curious as to how much less I should expect to get paid based off of not being done with college.

Opinions?

(this is for a training video editing/training department "coordinator" position..)

Didn't you answer your own question?
Take whatever you're being paid now and multiply it by 2.
That's how much a college degree is worth.

2 year degree gets you the biggest salary increase. 4 year degree is a nice increase over 2 generally. Masters degree is almost worthless unless a company has a set salary increase for people with masters degrees. In my experience it isn't worth the money or the time to get one. I don't know about a PhD.

I've heard (from several people) that you eventually hit a glass ceiling if you don't have a master's unless you're exceptional at what you do

$19.99 according to this e-mail I got from someone I don't know....

I say go for a degree. It makes you look good. With my degree in AI it has that 'wow' factor that is great for interviews. I was offered one job so I dismissed this other company that I had interviewed with who then got back to me and said they'd offer me £3K more than whatever the company I had chosen to go for was offering. Headhunted before I'd done a single day's work.

A degree is worth a lot.

tree fitty...

sorry had to do it. it really depends on the type of company. I had a friend who got treated like crap for not having a degree but it didn't hamper me when I didn't (now I do though). Degrees are pretty much crap anyways but people think that they mean something.

for me, probably 15/20k immediately, but it opens more doors for advancement. my masters will probably be worth another 10

A college degree does NOT double your pay.

You needed ANY 4-year degree to even be considered here. Didn't seem to matter what kind of 4-year degree... (experience was the most important after that). I guess the idea is they wanted to see if you could start and accomplish something all the way through. That weeds out a lot of people... good or bad (depending on what you did in place of...).

Not true.

What is it with people on this board thinking that if you don't go to college like they did, you're destined to work in McDonald's? It's probably because this board is comprised mostly of college kids.

You are leaving out a very crucial piece of information, which is the individual's intelligence. Yes, on average, a person with a college degree will make more than someone without a degree. But a person with a higher IQ will tend to make more than someone with a lower IQ, regardless if they went to college or not.

I've never had a problem outsmarting people. Throughout school and work, it's something inate. College gives you tools for the working world. But give a master mechanic and an idiot the same tools, and they won't be able to use them equally. Some people just have more natural ability than others.

I assume you mean just getting a degree and not changing jobs.
My degree gave me the skills that allowed me to get a job that quadrupled my pay.

You need a 4 year degree to work where I work also. I work here, but I don't have the degree. Figure that one out.

Your dad is boss? haha

Do you make as much? How long have you been there? Have your raises been equal? its definitely possible to succeed with out a degree, though in my mind it makes things SO much easier.
