Just how much difference is there between 4x and 8xFSAA at 1600x1200?

The new NV30 promises to bring 8x FSAA to the masses (well, the elite masses who can't affor $5000 vid cards). Assuming the NV30 is 30% faster than the R9700, that means it would be around 90fps at 16xAniso and 4xFSAA in UT2003, the most stressful game to be out for 6 months. Seeing as they said FSAA should lead to too much of a performance drop, I would say 60fps at 1600x1200 16xAniso, 8xFSAA.

Can people really tell the difference between 4xFSAA and 8xFSAA? Can they even tell the difference between no FSAA and 4x FSAA at that res?

Is there any point in buying the NV30 card for ANYTHING until Doom III is released?

Probably a big difference on my 733mhz PIII 😛

But seriously, according to Anand's article, nVidia has supposedly come up with an extremely efficient and lossless compression algorithm to handle FSAA, which supposedly means there will be very little impact when using FSAA, even at higher levels.

OK, I'll bite. Let's assume that the nv30 is 30% faster than R300.

There are several different benchamrks for UT2003, to which one are you referring?

According to this one : Unreal Tournament 2003 w/ AA & Aniso dm-antalus @ 1600x1200
Based on the 30% assumption, NV30 will score about 40 fps. I dunno if that's 8x AA or 4x.

there's your 30%, wo0t.

Regardless, it's all just specualtion. I like nVidia products but they make some outrageous claims sometimes. Must wait and see.

yes

yes

No, I wasn't talking about the PERFORMANCE difference, I was talking about the difference in IMAGE QUALITY. Are the still enough visible jaggies on the screen @ 1600x1200 @ 4xFSAA to warrant 8xFSAA?
