Just how hot 5850’s VRMs are?

Hi,

Have Thermalright HR-03 Plus from my 8800 GTX and now upgraded with 5850 (Asus).

Absolutely hate stock fan noise. So HR-03 with good PWM fan (fed from the card) is the route i want to take.

Unfortunately I have no space in my case for their VRM-R3/4, but have quite a few of their old vrm/memory heatsinks and 32x92mm blowing 6cm from those.

Do you thing it would it be enough to cool 5850’s VRMs?

If so what about oc/voltage increases (as Asus allows)?

Secondly – just how good are ATI’s drivers managing non-standard PWM fan 32mm thick 1.6A industrial Delta/Nidec?

I had no problems with 8800GTX (apart from some faulty 196xx driver which was withdrawn), but do not want to fry the card as it is secondhand with no warranty. Should i just use standard low amperage 25mm PWM or feed it a constant from mobo?

As well my last ATI was 1950pro – does Everest (5.3+) read all 5850’s core/diode/memory/ambient temperatures correctly?

IMO, that could work, as long as you aren't OCing very much (or at all). Keep an eye on temps with GPU-Z and keep them below 100C under load (< 90C would be ideal).

BTW, don't forget the little VRM up near the DVI connectors. You'll see it when you pull off the old HSF. You'll want to attach a small HS there. It doesn't seem to get quite as hot as the others, but it's a good precaution.

Ha,

Well i’m in the UK where 25C is the max ambient (for a few days per year) so these 32mms work at max 60% and when properly mounted they are in my experience are indeed best cfm/noise ratio.

Must admit that i never bought Noctua-like ‘designer’ overpriced fans so maybe missing the point there. But since i can have top of the range server Delta/Nidec/Fujikura/etc for free and i cannot possibly fault those reliability and performance-wise this is what works for me.

By the way the reference seems to cool those ~100C parts by the fan only? Why TR insists on two heatpipe solution with 80mm then?

Sometimes, the cooler you can make the VRMs the better the card will OC. The VRMs do make contact with the plate in the reference design, they have little thermal tape strip too.

Well yeah, free is always good.

FYI, Noctua doesn't design for CFM/noise, they design for the absolute minimal noise while still moving sufficient air. Once you get to super-low dBA, of course your CFM/noise is gonna be crap. :)

Eah, well, convinced me – need one 25x120mm for my htpc – shall look for a bargain Noctua on ebay just for curiosity’s sake.

RE:5850

The noise from stock looks to me mostly vibration-based.

Maybe i can somehow rubberglue the triangle base of that stock fan? No warranty/do not need the stock cooler anyway.

Any attempts made? – feel like gluing after Japan/Denmark and some bottles of speckled hen.

My earlier Everest question – does it read 5850 reliably? Why does fan start at 60%?

I dunno what it is really! The VRMs on my card seem to run hotter than most everyone's, even with copper shims + AS ceramique applied! I think installation was done properly, seeing how temps dropped about 10C across the board after it was done. Still, temps are too high and to me that seems to be the bottleneck in overclocking the card.

Now I am starting to think poor contact isn't the culprit, as the heatplate gets VERY hot to touch (confirmed this immediately after shutting the machine down). Airflow in my case probably isn't stellar, but shouldn't be all that bad. I even tried adding an intake fan right next to it and that didn't do diddy squat.



As you can see, the voltage I am feeding it with isn't anything crazy either. Do some cards naturally tend to get hotter than others? The card has been serviced at XFX thru RMA, maybe they gave me a poor overclocker? :(

Oh I am using the stock plate to cool the memory chips + VRMs btw. I have removed the shroud + 92mm fans and ziptied 1x 1850rpm GT + 1x 5v yate loon onto the heatsink.

Man those temps are insane....At least to me anyways :)

I hope those are Furmark Xtreme Burning temps.

I'd hope so

olmer - also note that you're going to need to figure out an alternative mounting method for the HR-03 Plus. Those were specific for the G80 cards and I'm very doubtful the mounting holes will line up. If you can convince Themalright to send you the HR-03 GT mounting, it'll probably work. Let us know though.

I did a test some time ago and my 5870's GPU temp was always higher than the rest (whatever VDDC Phase #(&^#@$ means, according to GPU-Z). Stock cooler.

xtreme burning mode + bump mapping, haven't touched anything else. Actually now the temps should be about 10degs lower now that I have applied the shims (the screenshot is from before that IIRC)
