Question Just how fast is an x5470 ?

I upgraded an old 1156 small form factor HP computer with this CPU, and according to Cinebench R15 and overall game performance it seems on par with an i5-2400. Still, many folks say the X5470 is actually much worse than i5-2400. Can someone please explain exactly why and provide a source?

So far, any of the stuff older than 4-5 years this chip handles like a champ. I dont see any bottlenecks using a low profile GTX 1650 whatsoever. Company of Heroes 2, Tomb Raider, Doom, Rage, etc etc. All works great. Even lots of the modern stuff runs fine as long as its not any of that poorly optimized crap like Ubisoft games or Crysis, but even that is arguably "playable".

Well an X5470 is basically a 45nm Core 2 Quad with 12MB L2 cache (Yorkfield in Core 2 speak or Harpertown in Xeon speak) -- these were among the best Core 2 chips released (except for the rather rare Dunnington chip which is a bit of an interesting beast) but -- that being said they have an inferior CPU architecture compared to a i5 2400 (which is Sandy Bridge, two full architectures newer) and they use a front side bus instead of an on-die memory controller.

Although .. a Xeon X5470 is an LGA771 cpu (similar to Core2's LGA775) -- not an LGA1156.

IF it is actually LGA1156 then what you have is actually a Lynnfield based Xeon and probably an X3470. This is still one generation older than a Sandy Bridge chip, but quite a bit better than an X5470 as it at least has a monolithic quad core die with a shared L3 cache and on-die memory controller.


But ultimately -- it's exactly as fast as the benchmarks say it is, whatever it is.

Sorry. You are absolutely right. Its an X3470@3.07 GHz. Somehow this non overclocking board gave it a mild overclock from 2.93 to 3.07.
