just how expensive is NYC?

I've never been to NYC and will be visiting it next week while I'm up to see my g/f. I'll we'll be in Soho for shopping and eating. I gather it's pricey there, but just how pricey is it? I always hear stories of "$10 per drink" and "$50 per meal".....which is all way above my price range. If that's the case then it might be waters and salads (or street vendor hotdogs) for me.

Well it's true that you can go places that are $10 a drink and $50 a meal, you can also get really good food for a decent price also. If you're in Soho, chinatown is VERY close by and has a lot of cheap and tasty restaurants. Also try to stop by the San Genarro festival which is going on in Little Italy (right next to chinatown and Soho as well) right now.

unfortunately i don't....and we're going with some friends of hers....who've already made reservations at some French/Moroccan place

To feed you and your girlfriend, as well as having a drink or two or three, My guess would be around $125.

This based only on it (a) being in Soho, (b) being a rather exotic 'theme' restaurant, (c) requiring reservations a week in advance, and (d) being a 'nice' place you would take guests to in order to show off your nice city.

You can get them for $1 around the city. All the venders near tourist attractions are rape. As you get closer to say Central Park, you can see the prices rise: $1, $1.25, $1.75, $2.25...
