Just how bad are RWD cars in the snow?

To all those that believe RWD vehicle suck in the snow remember this.

Almost all vehicles used to be rear wheel drive. And everybody was able to get around just fine. I have watched and been in RWD vehicles that have driven by those in the ditch with FWD and 4WD (Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah).

It all boils down to the driver's ability, the driver knowing his limitations and knowing and abilding by the vehicles limitations in the conditions presented.

Why is it so bad? Is it just the weigh ratio? I'm planning on getting a G35 coupe, which is pretty well balanced.. about 54%/46% front to rear.

In a FWD car, the engine sits pretty much right over the drive wheels. A Porsche 911 or a VW Bug, though RWD are also very good in the snow beause they are rear-engined.

ummm no we have a 911 and it fing horrid in the snow, hell even in the rain its easy as hell to spin the rear tires, the power to weight ratio is too great

Don't know about a 911 but the older VW Bugs were awesome in the snow. Sometimes you had probs keeping the people in the car warm, but was a great snow car surprisingly.

94 V8 Tbird + all season tires + 3.73 gears + Ohio snow = teh suck.

Slight inclines became nightmares. I probably should not have done that engine/rear end work.
(I sold it last year before winter)

Could a 911 and a old VW bug have ANYTHING in common?

Yes they do, but I bet the tires aren't one of things. Doubt you'll see too many 911's with snow tires, but they'd go just fine if they had them.

Probably won't go anywhere if they have some fat handling tires.
