Before I post any useful information I just have one thing to say...

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH! :Q:Q:Q :p

Phew! That felt good. Just came back from the dentist, i've been holding my mouth open for the last 1 1/2 hours for this lovely construction job they call a root canal! Remember that scene in Tommy Boy when David Spade took a 2X4 and smacked Chris Farley up the side of the head in front of the dinosaur museum? Well that's what the side of my head feels like right now, not because of any pain but because of all the novicane I made my dentist give me before he started.

A matter of fact, I didn't feel 'any' pain whatsoever. The anticipation and anxiety was killing me though, talk about a mental drain!

So if you are like me and rather beat yourself senseless in the head with a pick axe rather than seeing a dentist, don't worry.

Honestly, don't worry. I know you've had some bad experiences with dentists, but I'm sure it was an isolated incident. Get some recommendations from people you know and make sure you're plenty drugged up with novicaine and you'll be fine. :D

I had a root canal without even knowing.

Went into the dentist with my tooth hurting, he said he was going to try and save the tooth. He did some stuff, I felt a jolt of pain for like 2 seconds (when he tore out the root) and then it was over with.
I called back a couple days later cause the tooth was hurting (it got infected, got some drugs and took care of it) and they said I had a root canal. I was like WTF that's it?

Ameesh - Listen to what I'm about to say cause you don't want to be in the position I was a little while ago (pre-root canal).

I'm 33yrs. old and suffer from that O so common 'dentist phobia' that many people experience. When I was just a wee little ah heck, I had many cavities which were filled by this old school Nazi dentist that didn't bother with novicane! This is where my phobia started. For years I would do the dentist thing, just bare minimum or when I needed it (like a bad toothache, abscess, ect.). Now that I'm getting older, I'm becoming more aware of just how important my teeth are and keeping them maintained. I have a friend (late 40's) who just went to get 'ALL' his teeth pulled because he ignored this concept and now he has dentures. This really woke me up, the only thing that scares me more than the dentist is the realization that I could loose my teeth.....forever.

The tooth that I just had a root-canal done on, I put off for almost a year. The filling fell out and I never bothered to get it fixed right away. I don't have dental insurance right now so that made it easier to ignore. Well, ofcourse a cavity developed way down deep inside and finally the pain became intolerable. I was lucky to get away with just a root-canal, I was expecting that the tooth would have to be extracted, God what was I thinking letting this go for so long?

When I finally got enough courage to go see a dentist - I paid the price for sure. It took 3 needles of novicane to numb the nerve to a point where he could start to prepare it for the root canal, this was about a month ago. I don't think there are words in the English Oxford Dictionary to express the sheer, intense pain that I felt (only for 1/100 of a second, 3X times) when that drill connected to the nerve. I would'nt wish that sort of pain on my worse enemy!!

I learned my lesson the hard way. The wisest (sp?) advice I can give to all is don't put it off any longer than you need too.

(BTW: You know what's funny, this is just the tip of the iceberg for me - I have to get all 4 wisdom teeth pulled, 2 impacted, next month! I put that off for over 10 years, but i'll be knocked out for that one, phew!)

Man, last time I had dental work, it took three shots of novacain, and plenty of giggle gas to get my ready. and it still hurt to some degree. I felt like jamming a tooth brush up the dentists nose when he hit the nerve.

it's not the pain that's so bad... it's the smell of your own teeth being grinded away with a drill....gawd it smells awful.

First let me say that I used to hate the deentist but after having not gone to the dentist for 10 years I found myself the owner of a root canal :p I went to my friend who is a dentist and he fixed me up good as anything :)

Your right, the mental anticipation of the pain was bad. Everyone who know I had to get a root canal said it was going to hurt like a biotch :p But actually it did not hurt except for the keeping the mouth open.......... thank goodness he had a bite guard that I could rest my teeth on :)

I also though I was dead meat after the root canal becasue of not going to see a dentist for 10 years......... but as luck would have it I only had the root canal :D I also got a 25% discount :D

Cheers,
Aquaman
