My wife and I agreed to an in-home RainSoft Water Softener presentation since they were offering 3-days and 2-nights at a hotel in the location of our choice. It was pretty amusing as he did the history of the company and the normal scare tactics (chemicals in the water cause cancer!). There was also the "the air and water were cleaner 50 years ago" line. Oh really? I don't recall Lake Eerie catching on fire because it is so polluted recently...
Anyways, he ran some of our tap water through a test filter and then did two tests. One was supposed to attract any minerals in the water and drag it to the bottom of the beaker. The other was supposed to change the water to blue if the water was soft and to red if it was hard.
Both tests failed...for him. The first test resulted in the filtered water cloudier than the straight tap water. The second test resulted in the filtered water being just as red as the tap water.
We were only the second or third presentation that this guy has done and he was pretty embarrassed. Kind of fun to watch him squirm in his seat.
