Thunderstorms rolling through here today, I was downstairs playing some San Andreas when we had a power bump (I had just gotten 14 snapshots too :disgust: ). I had left my desktop PC on, so I went upstairs to check on it. I would have shut it off, but the storms kind of snuck up on me, I didn't even hear any thunder until AFTER the power went off/on.
Just hitting the power button didn't turn my desktop back on. I cycled the power strip, no dice. Flipped the power supply switch from off to on, still nothing. Finally I unplugged it from the PS for about 20 seconds, then plugged it in again. That time, it fired up. Everything seems to be working fine now, but back in my days working in the PC shop, we had PC's come in that would appear fine, then when you tried to tax the system, things would get flaky.
Luckily, I have renters insurance. I'm going to dig my policy up here to see what my deductible is, hopefully it's low. Last week I specced out a C2D system to replace everything but the drives in this one, but decided against it because it was going to run about $800 and I really should be saving money for other things.
Current rig is a P4 2.4C with 1GB ram. I'm running a (wait for it) Geforce Ti4200 for graphics.
This is what I've been looking at on Newegg:
CPU: Intel C2D E4300 (I'll be overclocking)
MB: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Rev. 1.3
PS: Corsair CMPSU-520HX
Memory: 2GB dual channel (4GB is tempting, but I don't plan on running Vista until I absolutely have to)
Cooler: Tuniq Tower 120
Video: EVGA 60mb 8800GTS
Hard drives will carry over from my current rig. I have a pretty new NEC DVD Writer, the only problem with it is it has a white bezel, so if I get a black case I'll hopefully be able to find a black bezel without buying another drive. My trusty Pioneer slot-load DVD drive is also a white bezel, so I'll probably replace it with a tray-load model 🙁.
Oh, and a battery backup UPS this time 😀
So what do you think? I based that on the April system recommendations.
