You don't say Vista x68 or Vista x64,anyway I would go with Avast Home free edition(supports both) until AOL Active Virus shield is released for Vista,due this month some time.

Another option is to start off with a 30-day trialware of the full Kaspersky Antivirus 6, then switch to free AOL Kaspersky when the trialware comes out. Necessary links & configuration recommendations on this page.

Am running Vista Ultimate, and the latest release of AVG (free) works perfectly.

Are you on 32 or 64-bit?

Obligatory remark that AVG's detection rates are consistently rather low in comparative tests
