Just got through looking at a computer a coworker was having trouble with. . .

Imagine what you find when you have an original install (since 1999) of Windows 98 without any updates applied and that has been connected to broadband four four years.

I remember why I stopped doing tech support for people. . .

*Opens beer and tries to forget*. . .

BTW she wondered why it was slow?

WHEN WERE YOU AT MY HOUSE????

Buddy of mine asked me to help him with his computer; he said it was unusable. I went to check it out, what did I find?
A) So much spyware that the Internet was almost unusable
B) Some piece of spyware was running as a service and had a HUGE memory leak. Bottom line, you could only use the computer for 10 minutes before WinXP maxed out the page file and crashed.
C) After killing about 20 startup programs in MSconfig, I finally run AdAware. It found 1700+ objects using the quick scan.
D) Removing said spyware pooched the TCP/IP stack. I didn't understand why I couldn't connect to the Internet or release/renew the IP address from the router. Finally, I figured it out when I got home and checked it on the web from my place.
E)Had to guide him through repairing Winsock and the TCP/IP stack over the phone so that he could get the web up and running again.

What fun that day was...

Next time you can use LSPFix to automate fixing winsock. It's a lifesaver.
