i was wondering if this letter was one of those letters that everyone gets who selects mechanical engineering as their choice of major on the ACT?

Did you do well on the ACT? Illinois is a great CS school and I imagine their ME program is good as well. It might be something that they send to students with scores that might be good enough to get admitted to UIUC.

VeggieFrog got over 100 letters/brochures from schools all over the country after she did her SATS. They all looked really personalized, but we figured that everyone who got above a certain score got a similar letter.

:)

Can't answer your question specifically, but you must have gotten a hell of a score on the ACT, to have an engineering school at U of I marketing TO you. Usually students are trying like crazy to get IN. For them to send you an unsolicited invitation like that is the shiznit.

Sounds like a form letter to me...I got something like that from UIUC last year (when I was applying to colleges).

Edit: Have you ever requested info on that school or did you authorize the ACT to release your scores to colleges? My friends and I got tons of "fan mail" from colleges around/before application time last year. The stack of papers was *huge*. I wouldn't say it's anything to jump over...nor is it a guaranteed offer of admission. More like they send it out to everyone who scored >= X. However if you are interested in going, this might be a good opportunity to talk to'em and see what you can glean on fine-tuning your app to fit their wants.

Yes its a form letter as people have mentioned. Schools just send letters out to people who get above a certain score. If you get one from a neat looking college, keep it and read up on it. This just indicates that your score is in the school's desired range and you have a chance at getting in.

that's prolly why, I had Duke send me stuff and I never applied or even looked there, nothing. They spam it mostly to ppl above a certain score.

Well, I'm a U of I CompE grad, and its definitely cool that they're seeking you out like that. Excellent ME program, if that's what you're into. Good luck choosing a school. ;)

Good for getting a letter from U of I. It's a top notch school. Not that I'm biased or anything just because I go there but it really is a great school. :D

Also, be aware that Engineering Mechanics is NOT Mechanical Engineering. They aren't even close.

is EM more like the basics of engineering? what exactly is the difference? because ME is (and probably will still be, unless i like EM more) my major of choice

Good luck to you if you can get in. I was accepted into their CS program and received letters about that and something about robotics. I wound up chosing Univ. of Maryland over UIUC for other reasons though.

if EM is part of their TAM program it's more Physics and Math based. But there are some mechanics background stuff in there, but that's not their focus.

I got a lot of letters from schools I had no chance at. I think they send them to people that are obvious rejections as well becuase if they can convince them to put in an application, they make $50 in the time it takes to throw the app in the trash.

EM and TAM (Theoretical and Applied Mechanics) is sort of like fundamental engineering, I guess. It has a lot to do with theoretical modeling of system dynamics and stuff. Materials play a big role, too. The U of I engineering's basic statics, dynamics, and materials courses are part of the TAM department, as an example of stuff they do. I don't know exactly what it those TAM guys do but they're all pretty weird. They're like the physics people. And their classes suck. Enough about them.

I am in ME (as well as Math) and I wouldn't discourage you from choosing that as your major. It's one of the more popular majors at the school but, then again, it should be since it's one - if not the most - sought after major by companies at all the job fairs, internship fairs, etc. Plus, the ME laboratory building was just completely redone and is arguably the nicest engineering building on campus. :D Too bad the main academic building sort of sucks. Ah well.

If you've got questions about the ME curriculum (or the Math one), the school, the life there, or whatever else about Illinois, feel free to PM me. I love pimpin' my school. :p

In the middle of nowhere with 20,000+ midwestern coeds. Illinois is a good time if you like to drink. It's a good time if you don't like drinking, too, but what fun is that? ;)

Chicago, St.Louis, and Indianapolis are all short drives away, too, if you crave a big city. Champaign and Urbana both have some interesting offerings, though.

hmm, though uofi did send me this letter, i'm still considering MSOE as my top choice. ME sounds more "hands on" though i'm pretty strong in math and physics. EM sounds too researchy for me.

TAM is pretty theoretical. Their hands-on stuff is ok.

Close enough to those cities that you can go a concert or sporting event every now and then, but far enough to keep your parents from insisting you come home every weekend. Really a win-win situation on the location. :D
