Ive been eligible for an upgrade with AT&T for a few months now. I have been trying out a number of phones but I have finally found a great phone.
Before settling on the Eternity I tried out the Bold, Fuze and Iphone 3g. The Bold is a great phone, their new OS is really nice and responsive but it was just too much phone for me. Tons of features that I was never going to use and at a price like that it just wasn't worth it. Same thing with the Fuze; nice phone but expensive and lots of features that will not be used. Plus there is the fact that I absolutely hate windows mobile; very laggy and crashes. Then there was the iphone, I actually went and bought one and used it for a month before returning it. The new iphone is very nice but I just didnt need it. The app store is nice and there are tons of cool apps, I downloaded a bunch, but after the first day I stopped using them. The internet browser is the best on any phone, but I barely used that too. I eventually found that the only things I need out of a phone are; voice, text, MMS and very VERY light web browsing, the Eternity does all of this almost perfectly.
The OS is very smooth, only the slightest bit of lag but thats only when switching between certain apps. When it comes down to typing or entering a phone number or when moving between menus all operations are instant.
The widget bar is a nice feature, all though you can not fully customize it, I am happy with what shortcuts are on it. The only thing I would like to see accessible form the widget bar is messaging, but thats not a huge issue.
Ear piece and speaker phone volume is loud and clear. The speaker phone is definitely louder than the one on the iphone.
The integrated IM and email clients are good. The email app is basic but in a good way. It definitely wouldnt work too well for a more business oriented person but for the average person its a good program and I like it.
The browser is a full HTML browser and it gets the job done for basic web browsing. Quick searches on google, looking up addresses/phone numbers is fine, but the more complicated sites dont work out too well but again, for someone like me its fine. I have yet to try browsing anandtech from it.
All in all I think its a fantastic device. For the average person who needs a phone for voice, multimedia and texting with some light web or email support its perfect.
