IMO Trillian is too "busy" for my taste, which is why I prefer GAIM.

The one major improvement is that file transfers seem to actually work (woohoo UPnP support). The transparency thing is more of a pain than a feature, and the interface hasn't changed much for the better. Read the changelog here.

You gotta go to Tools, Plugins, and check the "System Tray Icon" plugin.
