At least you were smart enough to take down the plates. Nice job, hope they arrest the guy... but you might not get the trade item back if he's gotten rid of it already, so you should file a small claims against him.

To find his address, bring the plates to the DMV, and tell them you'll like the address to the plates. I think there's like a $30 processing fee, and if they ask, just say that this guy stopped to help you on the side of the highway when your car broke down, and you'll like to repay him. I haven't done this, but i remember reading in some magazine article awhile back on how to track down certain information.

The problem with getting info from DMV is that CA statutes limit information abou individuals that can be released. The most I'd be able to get is a name. As far as a residential address, I need to be involved in either law enforcement, auto insurance, census bureau, or auto manufacturer. I'll call DMV though, just to make sure. Maybe there's something they can do to help. Police have a couple good leads to go on so far, let's hope they act on them soon (they already have an address from the plates, how much more do they need?).

I've always been told that you can obtain information from the DMV (small fee) if you have a plate number, at least in Indiana. I don't know if it's true or not, but worth a shot.

Mike, back in high school I worked at a full service gas station at Lake Castaic. We had drive off one day and I got his license number. I went to the Valencia DMV, told them who I worked for, and they released all his info right there on the spot.

Maybe you could try that?
