location: the left house
time: 11:00pm ish
It was my first delivery to chester all night..the house didn't have a number on the porch, but a nearby house did, so I counted down numbers in my head until that porch.
there were two kids (between 16-21ish) sitting on the porch and I parked my car about where the red car is in the picture and a minivan was behind (nothing in front)
I got the pizza and soda out of my car and asked the two dudes "hey you order the pizza?" and they mumbled a yes sound, so I walked through that fence and up to porch where i put down the soda. i checked the price of the pizzas on the box ($23.31) and told him that, then he got on his phone and said something like "yo the pizza mans here, its 23...." and asked me the price again, and then finished his sentence
the other dude either had a bandana around his neck or a tshirt tied around it, i couldnt really tell, but he wasn't talking
i figured that the kid had called his mom to come down and give me the money, so I was just sitting there waiting
the other dude recognized someone across the street and they talked for a bit, then he came back
then a dude with a pitbull came by and the "other" dude recognized him too and he went down and they started talking again
the "other" dude came back up to the porch, but the pitbull dude just lingered a bit (off to the left in the picture provided)
i realized at this point that something was going on. the first kid with the phone kept calling and saying "yall better hurry up, hes waiting" and stuff like that, but that was weird since it was his "aunt's" house, so I was getting kind of nervous, but keeping my cool, leaning on the porch
a few more kids started gathering near the porch, but off a bit to the left (where the truck is) and I knew something was up
eventually i was just like "hey if you dont want the pizza anymore thats totally fine, we dont care" and the kid with the phone seemed uneasy and just said "ya.... you can go"
three kids were standing on the porch by the fence and they moved out of my way when i was leaving and i was nice "my bad yo" and they just nodded
i started heading the few more feet to my car and a kid in the small crowd (by the truck in that picture) said something to me like "how much is it?" as if he were going to buy it, and i turned to him and then
BAM i got punched hard in the right side of my head
i immediately turned to the punch to defend myself and noticed the person had backed up kind of (it was weird)
then a second kid came up and punched me in my side and then grabbed a trashcan and threw it at me kind of
now Im in the army ROTC and i would say that I could hold my own, but 7v1 isn't a very fair fight, so i reached in to my pocket and pulled out my money and said "yo fuck man chill take it" and the 2nd kid grabbed it and started running real fast away
i turned at the other kids and they were just staring at me and i hopped in my car, put it in to first gear and floored it
i started to call my boss, but then i saw two cop cars in front of me parked talking to each other (head to toe kind of) so I pulled up to them real fast and told them i just got robbed and they told me to lock my car and hop in theirs, so i did
the one car BOLTED back to where i was robbed and the car i was in patrolled down 24th and wrapped back to 23rd, asking if any of the people on the sidewalk were involved. to be honest i told the guy, i didnt know and cant tell black people apart that well
at this point theres literally 10 cop cars all patrolling on the scene and the first car that bolted reported that he found a cell phone at the scene or the robbery. i was transfered to his car and he started calling numbers in the phone book to find out whos phone it was. then we got called over to 4 suspects that were being detained
they had 4 black dudes against the wall and a couple of them definitely looked familiar. apparently they had admitted to being nearby, but werent involved
then the cop i was with figured out where the phone's owner lived and reported the address to someone else. we drove there and another cop got there first. he knocked up on the door and the mom came out and two kids were inside. i dont know what happened then but then those 2 kids admitted to being the one who made the order and the other for hitting me and taking the money
i sat there for like 30 minutes or more and eventually they asked for me to identify the kids. the one was definitely there (the one who was talking to me) and the other looked like the bandana kid, and thats what i told the cops
they got put in to a cop car and then the cop drived me back to my car, where he took my information
cops said i would have to go to court but my boss said thats unlikely
we'll see
sorry for long post, trying to write everything down now so in case I forget and so you know all of the details
total loss: $100-200 in money (i shouldnt have had that much, but i did) and then $200+ for the pizza bag that was stolen
note: i keep track of my tips and my boss is really nice so he gave me that money out of the drawer, and even a bit more for mileage
note: i was suspicious from the very first second of that delivery. once i got to the porch, though, there wasnt much I could do. the bandana kid was in my way and then those 3-4 other kids started hanging on the stairs. i tried being friendly to the uneasy kid on the phone, and i feel like it did help since he said i should just go
but who knows
questions i am still curious of: was this robbery planned or do you think the kids just didnt have money and it was impulsive? Do you think my speedy delivered helped me? like maybe they didnt have time to be fully ready for me...
who knows
UPDATE: UPDATE: I have to go to court Wednesday... UGH
I was called by the DA about a month ago and she told me that the two kids were about to go to their pre-trial hearing thing. She told me that 95% of people will take a plea bargain and not ever go to trial. She then sent me information in the mail about one of the two kids' punishments. I was wondering about the other kid, but I didn't say anything and just ignored it. (by the way the first kid got like 64 hours community service, has to take an anger management class, is on probation, and other stuff)
Today, she called me and said that one of the kids (juvenile) has requested an actual trial. She said that because the kid is being held in the juvenile detention center, the trial has to be within 10 days of his request. The judge scheduled the trial for this coming Wednesday and she said that I had to go.
UGH I was supposed to go to the zoo that day hahaha. Well... anyone ever been in a situation like this?
What will I have to do?
Are they going to brief me before I make any statements?
Are any of my family members allowed to come and just sit in the courtroom (I'm 19...)?
What if I don't remember the kid's face really.. it has now been over a month since the incident and I've basically ignored the situation.
Should I bring anything?
What should I wear?
UPDATE:
I went to the courthouse today at 1:00 pm. I was told that the trial would be at 2:00pm, but they would brief me beforehand.
When I was waiting, three cops that responded at the incident came in and checked in.
I got called to the back and the DA lady told me what was going on after talking to the cops. She said I would be called as the first witness and then a few other people would go up.
Then they called in my case and I went in and took a seat with the victim services lady. Black people (family of defendant and family of witnesses) filled the row ahead of me and the cops sat in the row ahead of that.
They called me up and then asked me some simple questions like my age and then what happened.
They then called up some black kids as witnesses and they were no help at all and changed their stories from what they said at the scene the night of the incident.
It was a confusing mess but the basic belief is that the kid I was at trial for today was the ringleader. He told the other kid that there was a "mission" that he would get money from and to follow him. He ordered the pizza and then told the other kids what to do.
However, the only evidence at all to prove this was the two statements by the first 2 kids the night of the event. They both changed their stories, since, too...
The judge had to acquit the kid because there really wasn't enough evidence. I respect that the court system could not do anything because there was no real evidence, but it is fucked up. The judge said himself that he knew the kid was definitely involved and he most probably was.
OH WELL, I guess I just have to trust that the court system works and that you can't win everything and that it is for the best.
Good news:
Apparently the person that actually hit me was an adult and will get actual jail time. I thought he was one of the juveniles from the beginning, but apparently not.
Also, the kid that only got probation... turns out he had cocaine on him the second time the police went to talk to him and he is going to get in trouble for that.
