Insert "if only GE had thought of BiMAC 50 years ago" comment here.

Surprised they have actual pictures of the RPV in a public report.

edit: I still don't believe it's actually going to melt through the containment, btw.

Man, sucks to be living there right now.

This meltdown serves to remind us how dangerous nuclear power can be. The Japanese are probably one of the most stringent and careful when it comes to managing their plants. If it can happen to them, it can happen to any of us. One thing I don't seem to be hearing a lot of is "This could have been avoided" which tells me they did everything right and still got hosed. That really sucks.

well nothing on the major networks about this. so until then im calling shens. and i hope its shens because if this is true its a big fucking deal.

silly question, but wouldn't this molten core just continue on until he reached the earth's core and disintegrate in that?

Well... they did put the backup generators for the reactor cooling system in the basement of the friggin power plant, even though it was in a tsunami zone. That wasn't very smart.

Secretly the Japanese are hoping this will bring about real life tentacle porn in their population, freeing their animators up for new and even more disturbing visuals.

Will the amount of nuclear material be sufficient enough to poison a water table? Aren't we talking millions of gallons of water?
Um, yeah, it'd be very measurable and very bad if uranium/plutonium/other fission products got into the water table.

I quit reading after it said it would melt all the way through the U.S.

This is like the late night AM radio show that always talks about aliens and abductions. Usually a slack jaw yokel calls in saying 'I done been probed.'

Right when I read the title I knew it was going to be about the nuclear reactor.

Can anyone explain to me how serious this is? I keep hearing things about how oooo... IT is not as serious as three mile island or Chernobyl.

It is officially more serious than 3 Mile Island, but not quite as serious as Chernobyl.

Though....maybe it will out-serious Chernobyl?
